Newburyport, MA - It is with great sadness that the family of Serafina Ann Orlando (Nicastro) announces her passing on Saturday, July 28, 2018, at the age of 81. Sera will be lovingly remembered by her children, son Bruce and wife Cheryl Moore, daughter Julie and husband Tim Macie. Sera will also be fondly remembered by her four grandchildren, Bruce “Lil Bruce” Moore, Shane Moore, Jacob Wentworth, Jessica Wentworth; her great-grandson Jaden Moore; by her many in-law grandchildren; great-grandchildren; her siblings Clara “Cookie” Smith, Diane Hopkinson, John Nicastro; and by her many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Sera was predeceased by her husband Dominic Orlando, parents Baptista “Thida” Nicastro (father), Carolyn (Hayes) Nicastro (mother); by her two children, Jacqueline and Sera; brother Jerry Nicastro; sisters Phyllis Asaro and Carol Costa. A native of Gloucester, Mass., she was born down at the “Fort” in 1937 and grew up in the “Beehive.” Sera attended Gloucester High School, graduated and enlisted into the U.S. Navy where she was subsequently assigned to the Naval Photographic Center, Washington D.C. Navy Yard. After her service in the Navy she returned to Gloucester and worked in the fishing industry for several years. Later she moved to Newburyport, Mass., before traveling the United States and Europe with her husband Dominic Orlando (U.S. Army Sergeant First Class) before returning to Newburyport where she worked for an organization assisting those with addictions, and for H&R Block, for more than 20 years, and raising her two children.
Her visiting hours will be held in Greely’s Funeral Home, at 212 Washington St., Gloucester, Mass., on Monday, August 6, 2018, from 5 to 8 p.m. Family and friends are cordially invited. A Mass for Sera will be celebrated in St. Ann’s Church, Holy Family Parish, at 74 Pleasant Street, Gloucester, MA, at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, August 7, 2018. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Sera can be made to the Disabled American Veterans Association at DAV.ORG or to www.operationhomefront.org. A celebration lunch for Sera will be held at the Gloucester Fraternity Club following the funeral with Military Honors at Calvary Cemetery.
