Newburyport - Sara Anne "Sally" Eames died on Monday, February 24, 2025 after a long illness with dementia. She spent the last several years living at AdviniaCare Country Center in Newburyport, but prior to her diagnosis she lived just across the street and would volunteer her time visiting with residents at the nursing home. She entered the home as a resident knowing the Director and some of the staff members well.
Born in Athol MA., Sally grew up in Orange, MA as the youngest of three children of Herbert H. Eames, Sr. and Mary Shaffer Eames. As a young adult in the 1960's, she worked for Northeast Airlines in Boston, MA as a reservation agent. Shortly after Northeast Airlines became Delta Airlines, she transferred to Tampa, Florida in the 1970s where she lived in a duplex alongside her parents.
She and her parents moved back to Massachusetts in the 1980's; first to Chatham and then finally to Newburyport. Her work with the airlines afforded her the opportunity to travel extensively. She enjoyed many trips with friends around the U.S. and several trips to Europe. In the 1990's she finished out her career at Delta and she devotedly cared for her parents until their deaths.
In addition to her volunteer work with the Newburyport Public Library and the Newburyport Housing Authority, Sally served as President of the General Charitable Society of Newburyport. She was also very active in the All Saints Episcopal Church in West Newbury, MA. She wrote a column for the Daily News of Newburyport, expressing her opinions and insights about the goings on around town. She appreciated the art scene in Newburyport and loved animals. She and her parents had many dogs over the years and she enjoyed helping a friend foster kittens despite being very allergic to them!
Although Sally never had children of her own, she was proud of her extended family of nieces and nephews: Beth and Jeff Brown of NH, Steve and Nancy Eames of NH, Kim and Joe Santucci of NH, Holly Hendrickson of MA and Pete and Marina Eames of MA. Before her illness took her memory she came to know seven great nieces and nephews and in her last years enjoyed seeing pictures of her four great-great nieces and nephews.
Sally is predeceased by her sister, Margaret (Margo) Eames Ludwig and her brother Herbert (Herb) Eames Jr.. She leaves behind her sister-in-law, Pam Eames of NH and brother-in-law, Rolf Ludwig also of NH. She will be cremated and a memorial gathering with family will happen in the near future.
