Newburyport - Roger Steven DeMerritt

December 17, 1944 — June 16, 2026

Roger Steven DeMerritt, a beloved figure in the Newburyport community, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2026, at Beverly Hospital. Born on December 17, 1944, in Newburyport, MA, Steve was the son of Roger F. DeMerritt and Edna Fowle DeMerritt.

Steve graduated from Bentley University, which led him to a long government career including the Department of Defense and the Internal Revenue Service. After retiring in the early 2000s, he continued to serve his community, offering tax preparation services to many local businesses and families.

A Vietnam War veteran, Steve was awarded the Bronze Star for his bravery and service. His commitment to his country was matched by his devotion to his hometown, where he was a familiar face at the Newburyport YMCA in the 1980s, including service on the Board of Directors.

Steve married Robin Irving DeMerritt, with whom he shared many joyful years until her passing. Together, they enjoyed many travels, creating cherished memories.

He is survived by his sister, Barbara Dennis, and a large extended family of nieces, nephews, and their families. Steve was predeceased by his beloved wife, Robin, and sister, Shirley McCormack. His family and friends will forever remember his wry wit, generous spirit, and unwavering loyalty.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, June 30, 2026 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Funeral Home, 35 Green Street, Newburyport, MA. A private burial will be held at a future date.
