Newburyport - Richard Ronald "Smacka" McDermott, 78, passed away on April 10, 2026, with his daughters by his side.

Richard was the beloved father of Kim Kane and Vicki McGrath. He was a proud grandfather to Alyssa Gaigg, Scott LaPlante, Caitlyn Kane, Tyler Kane, Zachary Fowler, and Brendan Kane, and a cherished great-grandfather to Leon, Allana, and Lincoln. He also leaves behind his beloved grand-dog, Daisy, as well as many nieces and nephews who will remember him fondly.

Richard was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Nellie McDermott; his brothers Thomas "Sonny," Jack, Wayne, Leo, Bobby, and David; and his sisters Dorothy, Jane, and Alice.

Richard proudly served his country in the United States Army as a Vietnam Veteran. Following his honorable discharge, he began his career as a typesetter at the Newburyport Daily News.

He enjoyed bowling and spending Friday evenings having a beer with friends at the American Legion in Newburyport. Richard was known for always being willing to lend a helping hand to family and friends.

Above all else, Richard's daughters and grandchildren were his world. Whether taking the kids for walks or cheering them on at their sporting events, he was always there supporting them every step of the way.

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.

Family and Friends are invited to Richard's Graveside Service with Military Honors at 10:00 AM on Monday April 20, 2025 at Belleville Cemetery in Newburyport. The Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home 193 High St. Newburyport, MA 01950 is assisting Mr. McDermott's family with his arrangements.
