Georgetown - Dr. Philip Gordon Rosene, MD, Capt. USNR (Ret), passed away peacefully on January 11, 2026, at his home in Georgetown. Born: 25 November1930 Died: 11 January2026
Phil was born in Callaway Nebraska and grew up in both Callaway and Lincoln Nebraska. While in Lincoln Phil enjoyed Scouting and attaining his Eagle badge along with camping and canoeing. Summers were spent at the family farm near Stromsburg Nebraska where he learned to hunt small game for the dinner table while living with his Aunt Irene. From that experience Phil came to enjoy a lifetime of the shooting sports and hunting. Phil competed at many shooting matches and attended the national pistol matches for 30 years. Phil was a member of just about every local gun club.
Phil attended Nebraska Wesleyan University graduating in 1952 with a degree in chemistry. While there he met the love of his life, Betty Manley and was married December 23, 1951. Phil enlisted in the US Navy at the age of 17 and served active and reservist until his retirement at age 62. He very much enjoyed his career in the Navy. Phil was a corpsman during the Korean War, and this experience was to later influence his education. Phil later graduated in ~1959 with a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln Nebraska.
During these student years Phil worked summers for the United States Geological Survey as a ground water chemist and after graduation full time. In 1961 Phil enrolled at the University of Nebraska College of Medicine where he could pursue his love of medicine. At that time the family was living in Lincoln and Phil was living at the Phi Chi medical fraternity house in Omaha and coming home on weekends. In 1963 Phil moved the family to Omaha. Phil graduated from med school in 1965. Phil began med school with five children and graduated with six and was ranked second in his class. Phil used his chemical engineering knowledge for his senior thesis of designing and building a blood gas machine to monitor fetal blood gasses in close to real time. The school used that equipment for quite a few years. In Phil's senior year the Navy commissioned him as an Ensign and upon graduation was promoted to Lieutenant (Junior Grade) and was assigned an Annapolis graduating class for a future promotion timeline. At that time the family moved to Charleston, SC Naval base for his internship and then to Chelsea, MA Naval Hospital for his residency in anesthesiology. Phil served during the Vietnam War at the US Naval Hospital on Guam.
In 1970, Philip started his own private practice at Anna Jaques hospital. He is credited with starting the first Anesthesiology department in the hospital, as well as starting the Respiratory Therapy department in 1971. Philip also brought Anesthesiology and Respiratory Therapy to the former Amesbury Hospital, which is now the Amesbury Health Center. One of his favorite activities was to bring the OR nurses Easter candy and would sign it from the "Ether Bunny". He enjoyed a 34-year career before retiring in 2004 at the age of 73.
