Newburyport - Paul A. Ferguson died Friday morning, December 5, 2025, at his residence, surrounded by his family. He was born in Lynn, MA, on September 2, 1939, to the late Raymond and Mabel (Burns) Ferguson.
After graduating from Lynn Classical High School, Class of 1955, Paul enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving proudly in the 31st Rescue Squadron. Upon returning home, he began a long and varied career in law enforcement. He served with the Metropolitan District Commission Police in Boston, worked as a Special Officer for both the Newburyport and Waltham Police Departments, and became a K-9 Officer for the Essex County Sheriff's Department. During this time, he was also assigned duties under the supervision of the U.S. Secret Service during President George H. W. Bush's administration. In addition to his public service, Paul founded and operated several businesses, including Allshine and Atlas Cleaning Companies.
Paul's dedication to his community extended far beyond law enforcement. He served as Special Assistant to Mayor Peter Matthews, was elected County Commissioner for Newburyport, Amesbury, and Salisbury, and was one of the original founders of The Link House. He later served as Executive Director of Turning Point in Newburyport. He also remained active in several civic organizations, including service as past president of the Newburyport Chamber of Commerce and membership in the Newburyport Rotary, the Elks Lodge, and the Haverhill Chamber of Commerce.
Paul was deeply proud of his service—to his country, his communities, and the people he cared for. He treasured the lifelong friendships he kept with the boys he met in childhood from his "Irish Lynn neighborhood." He also had a great love for animals, especially dogs and birds, and spent many years breeding American Singer canaries.
Paul is survived by his children, Paul Ferguson Jr., Audrey Ferguson, Douglas Ferguson, Louri-Ann Lee, Katherine "Cassy" Ferguson, and James Ferguson; his grandchildren: Alexis and Kaylin Lee, and Jack, Gabrielle, and Molly Crooks; and his great-grandchildren, Derrick Diodati, Rowan Fowler, and Tanner Jasper. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, including Mabel Melanson, who held a very special place in his life.
He was predeceased by his siblings, Eleanor Nolan, Raymond Ferguson, and Dorothy Murphy.
Family and friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, December 16, 2025 at the Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home. Paul's Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Wednesday December 17, 2025 at Immaculate Conception Church, his burial will be private at a later date.
