Patricia "Pat" McCarthy Obituary

Newburyport - Newburyport - Patricia (Carey) McCarthy, 76, a native and lifelong resident of Newburyport, passed away peacefully on July 31, 2025 surrounded by her family, after a valiant battle with lung cancer.

She was born on June 4, 1949, to the late Louise (Sullivan) Carey and Henry Carey, of Newburyport. One of three children, Pat attended the Immaculate Conception Grammar School and graduated from Newburyport High School in 1967, where she was active in sports and a member of various committees. She served as the class Historian for three years and it brought her great pride that her mother held the same title for the class of 37 and her daughter for the class of 97.

On October 24, 1970, she married Richard, her high school sweetheart and the couple settled in Newburyport to raise their family. Pat was initially a stay-at-home mom, as taking care of her family brought her greatest joy. She loved watching her children and grandchildren participate in the sports they excelled in, perform in school plays and concerts and travel on various vacations. Pat and Richard continued to travel as they became empty nesters. For 25 consecutive years they went to Aruba, where they met a group of wonderful friends, who not only looked forward to meeting up every year, but also brought their friendship back to New England. Pat and Richard enjoyed many trips to Hawaii, Germany, France, Rome, Santorini, Ireland, and Italy. They also visited numerous places in the United States but her true passion was staying close to the beach, attending Red Sox games, reading a good book and being with her family.

In 1971 she graduated from Salem State College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education and years later; after raising her family, she earned a master's degree from Fitchburg State College. For 25 years she was a teacher in the Amesbury school system where she received the Teacher Excellent Award on two separate occasions. Pat loved being a 2nd and 3rd grade teacher and loved working with young children. She was well known and loved amongst her students, peers and parents. She spent most of her summer with her daughter at her side, setting up the perfect classroom, creating a safe and trusting environment, prioritizing student well-being, to foster happiness and engagement.

Pat was also known for her strong will, unwavering determination, and love and support for her family and friends. She was a selfless, gracious and giving person, always willing to help anyone in need. She had friendships that have spanned a lifetime, dear friends who spent many joyous occasions going out to lunch, embarking on day trip adventures and fabulous vacations. Friendships that most people could only dream of, such as her IC church group, Latitude pool group, Amesbury teacher group, and Book club group, all of whom supported her until the very end.

Pat is survived by the love of her life and beloved husband, Richard McCarthy of 54 years; their three children, Michael (Jennifer) McCarthy of Middleton, Shawn (Krissy) McCarthy of Amesbury and Erin (Paul) Letourneau of Connecticut; their seven grandchildren, who were also the loves of her life: Connor, Christopher, Caden, Lillian, Reaghan, Matthew and Kaylee. She is survived by her siblings Michael (Ann) Carey of Utah and Florida and Nancy (Michael) Kennison of Newburyport, Sister-in-law Diane (Edward) Andersen of Merrimac and brother-in-law, William (Patricia) McCarthy of Newton, NH. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Pat's family would like to extend their heartfelt thank you to Dr. Jackman and staff at Dana Farber, Tufts home hospice team and the staff of the High Point House in Haverhill, for their compassionate care of our mother during this difficult time.

Family and friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 7, 2025 at the Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home, 193 High St., Newburyport, MA.
