Michael "Smokey" McCann Obituary
AMESBURY - Michael J. "Smokey" McCann, passed away on Friday, June 25, 2021, at home after a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his wife, Amy, and his close friends, Smitty and Michele.
He was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, son of the late Joseph McCann and Harriet (Brown) McCann. He graduated in 1969 from Alexander Hamilton High School. He moved to the New England area to play modified fast pitch softball and played third base for a number of local teams. After winning a softball championship, he coached Little League Baseball and Rotary Youth Basketball.
Michael also loved all types of music, especially the Grateful Dead. "Huck" was also an avid bass fisherman. His "Extended Play" camp at Province Lake in Effingham, NH was a special place for him in his last three years.
He worked for Microfab for a number of years and house painting for Woundy and Son. His most rewarding job was his last one as an Amesbury High School custodian. For 19 years, he touched the lives of many Amesbury High students, athletes, teachers, and coworkers. He was a social and caring man who was able to instantly make friends with anyone he met. During his retirement his passion was painting. He painted lighthouses, NYC skylines, and faces on everything (wood, bark, stone, cardboard and clothing).
Michael is survived by his wife, Amy Bergeron of Amesbury, MA; his sisters, MaryEllen Millwater and her husband, Donald; Margaret Mastrella and her husband, Thomas; his mother-in-law, Geraldine Bergeron; sister-in-law Elizabeth Bergeron; and brother-in-law, Steven Bergeron; along with his nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and dear friends. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his father-in-law, George Bergeron.
We would like to thank everyone at Merrimack Valley Hospice for his care during the last two months. They were truly angels.
As requested by Michael, there are no planned services at this time. A Celebration of Life will be held in the future.
