Newburyport - Mary Shattuck, a long-time resident of Newburyport, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on March 24th surrounded by her family and friends. Mary was born on August 15,1953 to Fran and Frank Shattuck and is survived by her four sisters and two brothers. Mary grew up in New Jersey, spending her adult years in Vermont and Massachusetts.

Mary graduated from Radcliffe College with a Master in Landscape Design. Early in her career she used her skills to design and restore plantings for the marshlands of Ipswich. Also drawn to taking classes and learning, she worked many years in administration for academic programs, such as those at Newburyport High School, School Year Abroad, and Montserrat College of Art. She was highly skilled and professional in her work and often went out of her way to help students and coworkers.

Mary was big-hearted with a kind and generous nature. Her quick wit and laugh were contagious, lighting up any room that she graced with her presence. People were drawn to her intellect as well. Whenever meeting up with Mary, good conversations and interesting stories were always plentiful. As a voracious reader, she had the best book recommendations and gave interesting insights into them. Mary was a talented and accomplished fiber artist and a treasured friend among the various fiber communities that she belonged to. She often warmly gave her work away.

Her kitties adored her as she did them. They often snuggled together as she knit or read a favorite book, content with each other's company.

Those that knew Mary were very lucky.

She will be greatly missed.
