Newton, NH - On Tuesday, January 14, 2020, another light was lost to this world. Surrounded by her loved ones, Marla D. Miller of Newton, NH, peacefully passed away at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, ending her three-and-one-half year journey with cancer.
Born on October 28, 1965 in Amesbury, Marla was the daughter of Lorraine C. Dodier of Amesbury and of the late George Dodier, Sr. She was educated at Sacred Heart School and later in Amesbury Public Schools, graduating with the Amesbury High School Class of 1983. During her years as a youth in Amesbury, she enjoyed participating in sports, listening to music and marching with the Medallions Drill Team of Amesbury. She studied Business at Fisher Junior College in Boston, graduating cum laude. Upon graduation, she held secretarial positions in various locations, and served as an administrative assistant to the engineering department of Mercer, USA in Newburyport for more than 20 years.
Marla leaves her soul mate and best friend of 29 years, Robert Miller, Jr., who was forever by her side, giving her support and strength throughout those years together and, especially through her battle. His energy and love for her kept her hopeful and strong. Together, they have been an inspiration to many of those who have also had to deal with the same struggles of battling cancer. Additionally, Marla was a devoted and prideful mom to her sons, Robert Miller III and Nathan Miller, both of Newton. Marla enjoyed spending time with her "boys", going to concerts, watching the Patriots games on Sundays, taking trips, having taco Tuesdays at Agave or a great burger at Tasty Burger. Family, which also includes her dog and companion, Gus, was of utmost importance for Marla.
Although quiet in nature, Marla was always held in deep regard and fondness for her warm thoughtfulness and kindness. She strived to remain physically fit, spending time at the gym with her husband and maintaining a healthy diet. One of her proudest personal moments was when she crossed the finish line hand-in-hand with her husband in her first Fenway Spartan Race. She did this just after having been first diagnosed with cancer. Marla was recently told by a friend who also suffered from cancer, "Don't count your days, but make your days count." Marla was fearless, strong and determined. She truly made all her days count.
Marla's memory will be cherished by her sister, Maureen Boody and her husband, Thomas, her brother, George Dodier, Jr., all of Amesbury, her sister, Susan Grena of Belleville, NJ, and her sisters-in-law, Joanna Dodier, of Amesbury and Debbie Miller Bradshaw and her husband, Bob, of Jacksonville, FLa, along with several nieces and nephews and their families. She is predeceased by her brother, Peter Dodier, and her sister-in-law, Michelle Dodier.
Family and friends may call on Monday, January 20, 2020, at EV Jutras and Sons Funeral Home, 118 Friend Street, Amesbury. Visiting hours will be from 4 to 6:30 p.m., directly followed by a Celebration of Life at the funeral home. Private burial will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, for those who wish to honor the memory of Marla Miller, memorial contributions may be made to Tough Warrior Princesses, a locally based non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds for cancer-related charities and research organizations with the goal of fighting cancer. Donations can be sent to Tough Warrior Princesses, 80 Monroe Street, Amesbury, MA 01913 or online at https://www.toughwarriorprincesses.com/.

Marla's sweet nature is apparent in her son Nate, with whom I worked as a teacher in 2013. Her loss to her family, friends and the world is very hard to take in. She is at peace in the Father's arms. May God comfort those she left behind to mourn and miss her. Selah.

Rob--
Words cannot adequately express our sorrow in learning of Marla's passing. She was a true inspiration on her daily walks with Gus by her side. Even the extremes of weather did not deter her. Recently, on a cold blustery day, with snow falling nonetheless, she and Gus braved a walk in the storm. She has deeply touched our lives and shown us how much it takes sometimes to brave our own storms.

Where do I start? Marla was an amazing person with a soft voice & a smile always. I didn’t grow up knowing Marla, but I do have many great memories with Marla during our time knowing one another. She was a great friend, wife, sister, daughter & a mom. She fought hard to win against cancer. I watch her victory when she crossed that finish line with her husband Rob with that same smile . My thought & prayers are with all her family during this time. Marla you are at peace now with no more pain. You will surely be missed. Until I see you again my friend & my new angel Love always Lisa❤️

To the Dodier Family; My deepest condolences to you and her family. As a classmate I have known Marla since Sacred Heart until we graduated from High School as well as through family celebrations between my family and hers. She was a nice person and quiet who I respected through the years and will be missed. May God be with you through his grace during these difficult times.
