IPSWICH - Linda Jo (George) Grimes, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on March 29, 2023, after a courageous battle with cancer at Kaplan House in Danvers. She was 66 years old.
Linda was born on October 8, 1956 in Ipswich, the daughter of the late to William E. and Annette "Nan" (Irons) George. A proud resident of Ipswich, she attended Ipswich schools, graduating in 1974 from Ipswich High School, where she was active in many clubs and sports. She went on to attend Westbrook College, earning her Associates degree, before heading back to Ipswich to begin her family. Linda held many titles in her career, office manager, assistant town clerk in Hamilton and Ipswich, all roles where she valued helping members of the community. Linda was an active member of the Ipswich Historical Society and she volunteered her time, supporting local efforts to improve the community, especially the schools. Linda helped start the Friends of Ipswich Elementary Schools (FRIES) program and was passionate about making Ipswich a wonderful place. Her final job she held was as a crossing guard at Winthrop school, where she loved greeting the families in town and helping the kids get into the school safely.
She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother to her two children and their sons. Linda, also known as "Grammy" to the boys, loved spending time with her grandsons, they were the lights of her life. She enjoyed all activities with the boys, spending time in the North End of Boston, Stoneham and Topsfield, cheering them on in all that they do. Throughout her life, Linda had a passion for knitting and enjoyed making gifts for any and all friends and family. She loved animals, and her loving cat Opal brought comfort to her in her final months. Linda will be deeply missed by all who knew her, especially her family and her amazing network of friends, and her legacy of love, humor and kindness will live on in the hearts of those she touched throughout her life.
Linda is survived by her children, Jennifer Quigley and her husband Mike of Stoneham, Josiah Grimes and his wife, Cori of Topsfield, grandsons, Michael and William Quigley of Stoneham and Josiah and Benjamin Grimes of Topsfield; her sisters, Deborah Henry and her husband Tim, and Judith Tucker, all of Ipswich, as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her former husband, A. James Grimes of Ipswich.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at a visitation on Monday April 3, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Whittier Porter Funeral Home, 6 High Street, Ipswich. Her funeral service will be Tuesday April 4, at 10 a.m. at the Ascension Memorial Church, County Street, Ipswich. Interment will follow in the Highland Cemetery, Ipswich.
