Laurence (Larry) Alfred Craig Obituary

Newburyport - Laurence (Larry) Alfred Craig, age 82, passed away on Thursday, March 6, 2025, in Newburyport, MA.

First and foremost, Larry was a family man. He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Anna Burgess Craig; his children, daughter Robin L. Nee of Natick, MA; daughter Lisa A. Guagliano of Needham, MA; son Stephen L. Craig of Holliston, MA; and son John R. (JR) Craig of Newburyport, MA; and his five grandchildren Conner, Brendan, Matthew, Olivia, and Aiden.

He was predeceased by his father Alfred Craig, mother Dorothy Craig, sister Ann Wyman, and brother Stephen Craig. Born in Rutland, VT, Larry grew to love skiing, hunting, fly fishing and fly tying for trout, and playing golf. Larry joked that during high school, he and his buddies were often out-skied by school mate, and famed skier Suzy Chapstick, the former Olympian skier Suzie Chaffee.

Larry loved his family, and could often be found teaching his children and grandchildren how to ski, hunt, and fish, along with participating in many other activities. Over the years, weekends would find Larry on the slopes of Vermont ski resorts teaching them how to ski; on the beaches of Plum Island, MA, teaching them how to fish; and on the hills, fields and mountains of North Carolina and Vermont, teaching them how to safely hunt.

He also was a strong member of his local communities. Larry was an active member of the Central Congregational Church of Newburyport, MA, and numerous civic organizations. These included serving as the Grand Warder of the Grand Commandry of Massachusetts and Rhode Island; a Past Patron of the Tontoquon Chapter of the Order of The Eastern Star; as well as the Program Chair of the Plum Island Surfcasters in Newburyport, MA.

Professionally, Larry retired as a realtor from Coldwell Banker in Newburyport, MA. Prior to that, Larry sold and taught insurance, including starting The Insurance & Security School in Randolph, MA. He graduated with a B.S., in insurance from Northeastern University.

A Celebration of Life in Larry's honor is taking place Saturday, March 15, at 1:00 p.m., preceded by calling hours from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Central Congregational Church, 14 Titcomb Street, Newburyport, MA, 01950. For more information call 978-465-0533.
