John E. Scanlon, Jr. Obituary

Boxford - John E. Scanlon Jr., age 70, passed away peacefully at his home in Boxford on May 10, 2026.

John was the loving father of John E. Scanlon III of Boxford and Jacqueline Scanlon of Georgetown, and the former husband and dear friend of their mother, Patricia Brunelle, formerly Patricia Scanlon, also of Georgetown. He was the beloved son of the late John E. Scanlon Sr. and Rosemary Scanlon of Newburyport.

He was the devoted brother and brother-in-law of Marianne Scanlon and the late Douglas White of Wilmington, NC; Brian and Lynn Scanlon of Wilmington, NC; Timothy and Deborah Scanlon of Newburyport; Kevin Scanlon of Queens; Joanne Scanlon and Adrienne Keenan of Norristown, PA; Brendan Scanlon of Amesbury; and Suzanne and Gregory Kress of Park City, UT.

John was also a cherished uncle to Rory Scanlon; Andrew and Emily Kress; Kaitlyn, Patrick, and Ryan Carney; Juliet and Max Exter; and Seth and Evan Butler.

John grew up in East Orange with his seven brothers and sisters. He spent summers boating and sailing with his family along the Merrimack River, Plum Island, and Newburyport, places that remained close to his heart throughout his life. He was always fixing, building, or replacing something and was quite the handyman. John was also known as a true "dog whisperer" who had a special connection with animals, and he leaves behind his beloved dogs, Bailey and Shane.

He studied engineering at Saint Joseph's University and went on to build a long career as a gas pipeline engineer. He worked for several local engineering firms before joining Stone & Webster in Boston and later CHI Engineering Services in Portsmouth, where he retired last year.

John will be deeply missed by his family and friends. John will be remembered for his love of the water, the great pride he took in his family, and his long dedication to his work in the gas pipeline industry.

Family and friends may call on Sunday May 17, 2026 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home, 193 High St. Newburyport, MA 01950.
