Haverhill, MA - John Clifford "Cliff" MacDonald, age 83, of Haverhill, died peacefully Tuesday morning, February 11, 2020, at Brigham Manor Nursing Home in Newburyport.

Born in Nashua, New Hampshire, September 19, 1936, he was one of three children of the late George and Katherine (Clifford) MacDonald. After graduating from high school, Cliff attended Princeton University, where he was one of the "star quarterbacks" of their football team. After serving with the United States Navy, he attended the University of New Hampshire, majoring in Geology.

For many years he had worked at Borden Chemicals, where he was the Director of Manufacturing.

He was an avid fisherman and loved the ocean waters. Key West was his favorite place for fishing and gathering with family and friends. In the local area, he could always be found on his boat in Newburyport, whether dockside or on the ocean.

He leaves behind fond memories of a life well lived and much loved to his two sons, Mark A. MacDonald and Michael T. MacDonald and wife Robyn; the mother of his children, Judith A. (West) MacDonald; his three grandchildren, Isabelle, Genevieve and Ian; his two sisters, Sandra Burns, and Katherine Yezerski and husband Howard; along with several generations of nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.

A "Celebration of Life" will be held at a later date, and will be announced by Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Family Funeral Home, 35 Green Street, Newburyport.

Louie and I have know Cliff for over 30 years. He was a fixture at The Boatworks(now Newburyport Yacht Club) where we spent many Sunday afternoons aboard Linda Mac with Cliff enjoying a beverage. We will miss you my friend. Until we meet again....salute!

I've known Cliff since 1986. There are not enough lines here for all the memories. Thankfully? Memories are mostly for those that made or shared in them. Mine with Cliff and our friends are safe and secure where I need them most. In my heart.
