Amesbury - John Kelleher, 86, of Amesbury, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on May 30, 2026, after a courageous and hard-fought battle with cancer.

Considered a true Renaissance man, "Captain John" was a lifelong learner, skilled in many pursuits and always appreciative of a good debate. In addition to his longtime teaching career at Amesbury High School, John was also a Christmas tree farmer who delighted in greeting smiling children and families as they searched for the perfect tree. He loved the outdoors, had a passion for skiing, and was an avid boater who enjoyed hosting memorable excursions with family and friends. He was also well known for surprising friends and acquaintances with his elaborate money-gami creations.

John's perfect day would include boating on the river or the ocean with friends, followed by a visit to one of Newburyport's favorite taverns. One of his favorite stories began in 1969 in the Amesbury High School gymnasium when he bet a beer that new physical education teacher Gail Pettengill could not make a free throw. Gail sank the shot, and the rest is history.

John was forever grateful for the friendship of Howie and Kathy Doane. Joy and laughter were always at the center of the countless adventures and memories they shared over 54 years of friendship.

John and Gail (Pettengill) Kelleher were married for 55 years and shared a life filled with love, adventure, and travel. Together they enjoyed visits to many Caribbean islands and spent winters in Florida.

In addition to his beloved wife Gail, John is survived by his brothers, Joseph and David Kelleher. He was predeceased by his parents, Mary and Francis Kelleher; his brother, Daniel; and his sisters, Jean, Maureen, and Rose.

Family and friends may call from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Friday June 5, 2026 at the Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home 193 High St. Newburyport, MA 01950. A private ceremony honoring John's life will be held on the ocean on a delightful summer day.
