Joan A. Esile Obituary

Newburyport - Newburyport - Joan Antoinette (Darley) Esile passed away peacefully on September 24, 2025. She was 89. Born in Southbridge, MA on January 30, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Arthur F. Darley and Irene (Richard) Darley. She was the wife of Franco Esile, whom she married in 1958.

Joan attended Eastford Road School in Southbridge and graduated from Southbridge High School in 1954, where she played the Sousaphone and upright bass in the high school band. A lover of music, she continued her education at Lowell State Teachers College (now UMASS Lowell) and graduated in 1958.

Joan had many interests. Most notably, Joan was a musician. She taught music at Amesbury Elementary School. Many remember her as teaching the Kodály method. She was the organist and music director at the Immaculate Conception Church, playing many weddings and funerals. In her later years, she enjoyed playing the ukulele with the Holy Jammers. She also loved being able to bring communion to those not able to bring themselves to church. Joan loved to knit and made many a sweater for friends and family members. She made fantastic baby sweaters and buntings.

Joan is survived by her children and grandchildren, Francesca D'Angelo and her husband Frank D'Angelo and their children, Andrew and Nicolas and his wife Samantha; Gina Esile-Sylva and her husband, Tom Sylva; Nina-Giovanna Esile and her children Nino and his wife, Carly, Mirella, Thalia and her partner Ned, Scirocco, Aisha and her husband Tom; Franco Esile and his wife Lisa and their daughter Aurelia; Vittoria Esile-Issen and her husband Daniel Issen and their daughters Lily and Eva. In addition to her children and grandchildren, she is survived by eleven great-grandchildren, Giulianna and Maddalena, Jaxon, Archer, Adeline, Blake, Giovanni, Johan, Charlie, and Penelope; and Arthur. She also leaves behind her beloved sister-in-law, Rose Esile of Byfield. She is predeceased by her husband Franco Esile, parents, Arthur and Irene (Richard) Darley, her twin sister, Jane Power, and her brother Arthur F. Darley.

Family and friends may call from 10 a.m. to Noon on Tuesday, September 30, 2025 at the Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home, 193 High St., Newburyport, MA 01950. Her Funeral Mass will follow at 12:30 at Immaculate Conception Church, followed by burial at St. Mary's Cemetery.
