James Charles Piepenbrink Obituary
Georgetown - Georgetown - Jim "Jay" Piepenbrink of Georgetown, ME, unexpectedly passed away on September 15, 2025. Born in Cohasset, ME, on May 17, 1958, Jim was the son of Charles Piepenbrink and Harriet (Hurd) Piepenbrink.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Lisa Thompson of Georgetown, ME; his daughter, Jen Piepenbrink of Carbondale, CO; his stepsons, Matthew Arguin and wife Kelly of Quincy, MA, and Zachary Arguin of Haverhill, MA; as well as numerous extended family members and dear friends.
Jim grew up in Cohasset, where he spent countless days playing in "the pit" with his Piepenbrink and Dickson cousins and finding adventure and mischief with his friends. A proud graduate of Cohasset High School, he was voted "Most Talkative" his senior year and was a dedicated three-season athlete—though hockey and golf were his greatest passions.
Following high school, Jim's love of hockey took him to the Philadelphia area, where he joined the Flyers organization and played for their AHL affiliate, the Hershey Bears. A highlight of his professional hockey career came when he was called up to play for the Flyers and scored his first NHL goal—a story he loved to tell with a grin, noting that the puck "tipped in off my rear end...but a goal's a goal, right?"
After his time in Philadelphia, Jim attended Boston University and began a long and impactful career as a Clinical Engineer which began at Massachusetts General Hospital. His work there paved the way for a 30-year tenure as the Director of Clinical Engineering at Boston Medical Center. Jim's dedication to his team, colleagues and work was unwavering and he often shared stories of the unique individuals and unanticipated experiences that he encountered at BMC.
Golf remained a lifelong joy for Jim. Whether playing with friends, family, "his boys" Matthew and Zachary, or his wife Lisa—whom he lovingly & patiently taught to play—he approached every round with enthusiasm and humor. Over the years, Jim played courses across the country, thoroughly enjoying (and occasionally cursing) every round.
Jim also had a deep love of travel and exploration, sharing adventures with family, friends, and colleagues. His favorite trips, however, were those spent visiting his daughter Jen whom he adored.
After retiring to Five Islands in 2023 with Lisa, Jim discovered a new passion as a volunteer with the Georgetown Fire & Rescue team. He fully embraced his role—creating training materials, learning new skills, and quickly becoming an active, valued member of the team.
Jim referenced a quote in his Cohasset HS yearbook profile from the poem Festus by Philip James Bailey: "It matters not how long we live but how". Even then Jim recognized and embraced that it is the living of life, welcoming and seeking adventures and experiences, showing kindness, giving love and freely sharing oneself with others that is of consequence, not our duration. His quick wit, colorful stories, listening ear & sage advice, passion for life & all whom he loved are missed everyday. However we're confident that wherever his spirit is now he's laughing and loving the adventure. JCP143.
An informal celebration of Jim's life will be held on Sunday, October 26th at 12 p.m. at the Georgetown Community Center in Five Islands, Maine. All are welcome to join in sharing stories and memories.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jim's memory to the Georgetown Fire & Rescue Team. Memories and copndolences can be shared at www.brackettfh.com.
