Haverhill - Haverhill - Hope Lawrence Cole, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, relative, and friend, died peacefully in her home on February 12, 2024.
An eminently kind and caring person with an ever-present smile and twinkling sense of humor, Hope Cole was a magnet to kids and dogs, as well as a lover of singing, piano, swimming, gardening, and wildlife. She and her husband, John F. Cole, raised three children in their treasured Peaslee Garrison antique brick house in East Haverhill, surrounded by grass, trees, and the rolling hills of Kimball Farm.
Born in Bronxville, NY, Hope was a graduate of Emma Willard School, Wellesley College, and Wheelock College of Education. She married John in 1959 at Big Wolf Lake in the Adirondack Mountains, her cherished lifelong vacation spot. Following her career as a school- teacher, Hope taught piano for many years and filled her life with music, whether listening to a recording, humming it around the house, or playing it on her baby grand. She adored her eight grandchildren, teaching them about the plants of the Adirondacks, attending countless games and performances, and always eager to hear of their latest proclamations and adventures.
Hope touched the lives of many, as a family member, friend, teacher of young children, and as a member of multiple organizations. She pursued her interests with much energy and dedication, including singing in the Sweet Adelines women's chorus for decades and serving as a Stephen Minister, a church member trained to care for those going through difficulties in life. She was also a member of the West Newbury Garden Club and a longtime volunteer at the Whittier Home, the birthplace of John Greenleaf Whittier. We will miss her always and continue to feel the warmth of her love.
Services will be held on Saturday, February 24th, 10 a.m. at St. James Episcopal Church, 119 Washington St., Groveland, MA 01834. Interment will follow at Walnut Cemetery, Haverhill. In lieu of flowers, Hope's family would deeply appreciate gifts to MSPCA-Angell; 350 South Huntington Ave., Boston, MA 02130; www.mspca.org.
