Geraldine P. Smith Obituary

Newburyport - Mrs. Geraldine “Gerry” P. (Berrett) Smith, 100, of Saugus and Newburyport, died peacefully on November 15, at the Country Center for Health and Rehab on Low Street in Newburyport.

Geraldine was born September 20, 1918; she was the daughter of the late Bertha F. and Walter F. Berrett; and sister of the late Helen B. Booth, Walter F. Berrett Jr. and George “Marshie” Berrett. Gerry grew up in Saugus, graduated from Saugus High School in 1936, and the Melrose Hospital School of Nursing in 1939. She married her high school sweetheart, the late Edward “Fred” F. Smith in 1940; an extraordinarily, loving relationship that lasted 74 years, until Fred’s death in 2015. She was a longtime communicant of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Saugus, and a member of the Altar Guild. After retirement, Gerry and Fred traveled extensively throughout the U.S., wintered in St. Augustine, Florida, and summered at Potter’s Place in West Lebanon, Maine.

Gerry was a great mom, who loved her children, adored her grandchildren, and cherished her great-grandchildren. “She lived to be 100 and she never grew old. Her smile was made of sunshine and her heart was solid gold."

Gerry is survived by her son Edward F. “Ted” Smith III and his fiancée Lisa Packard of Centerville, Mass., and Naples, Fla.; her daughter Nancy Cushing and her husband Joel of Newburyport, Mass., and Mount Dora, Fla.; her sister-in-law Shirley Daly of Long Island, N.Y.; grandchildren, Brian Smith and his wife Linda of Cumberland, R.I., Christopher and his significant other Rosemary Feitelberg of Glen, N.H., Jeffrey Smith and his wife Beth of Merrimac, Mass.; nine great-grandchildren, Michelle DeOrsay of Burbank, Calif., Matthew Smith of Providence, R.I., Lauren and Jake Smith of Cumberland, R.I., Abbie, Molly, Amanda, Joshua, and Cameron Smith of Merrimac, Mass., step-granddaughters, Tracey Gilliam and her husband Gregory of Bronxville, N.Y., Marcie Rehfield and her husband Troy of Winter Garden, Fla. She is also survived by five step-great-grandchildren, Piper, Bailey, and Sam Gilliam; as well as Jack and Cooper Rehfield; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was also the mother-in-law of the late JoAnn M. (McKeever) Smith.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Country Center for Health and Rehab, as well as the staff from Constellation Hospice for their loving care and support of Gerry and her family during the last few years.
