George Williams Obituary

North Andover - George Williams, formerly of Newburyport and Great Britain, passed away peacefully on August 8, 2022, following a period of declining health with members of his family at his bed side, at the age of 94.

Born in Quarter, Lanarkshire, Scotland on November 25, 1927, he was educated at Hamilton Academy and, following completion of his national service, Glasgow University. Although they knew each other at the Academy, it was not until some time later that George began seeing the woman who would be the love of his life: Moira Shannon. They married and began their life together on the west coast of Scotland. But, like many of their generation, George and Moira left Scotland with their baby daughter to pursue employment opportunities in England, where their younger daughter was born. They spent over 40 years in England, calling many places home, raising their family, working and enjoying holidays abroad. Even in retirement, never afraid of embarking on an adventure, Moira and George moved to Newburyport in 1998 to be close to their grandchildren

Alexander, Rebecca and Ben, who he adored. He taught them Scottish songs and poems, not perhaps all appropriate and provided them with a link to their Scottish ancestry and a strong bond to their grandfather.

It was not long before George established an active social life. George loved to entertain and he and Moira regularly hosted gatherings for friends. He was a regular at News and Views and prepared for the discussion by reading at least 3 newspapers every morning. George joined Moira to swim at the YWCA. He was the chief supporter of his son-in-law's over the hill soccer team and could be seen many Sunday mornings directing strategy from the side-lines.

Something of a fun-loving rascal, George will be remembered for his mischievous sense of humour, his strong opinions and irresistible charm, which was only heightened by his Scottish brogue, which he never lost. An avid rugby player in his youth, George was an enthusiastic sports fan, and he adopted the New England teams, although Baseball left him somewhat wanting. But no team captured his heart more than his boyhood team; Hamilton Academicals- "the Accies". No Saturday was complete until he knew the score of their matches.

He is survived by his loving wife of almost 68 years, his two daughters: Kim and her husband Trevor Miller of Newbury, Dawn and her partner Rob Bolland of Leicester, England and his three grandchildren Alexander Williams Miller of College Park, Maryland, Rebecca Williams Miller of Manhattan and Ben Williams Miller of Brooklyn.

As a husband, father and grandfather he brought much joy to their lives, and he will be sadly missed.

The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to the staff of the Garden View at the Edgewood Community, who provided such compassionate and sensitive care to George in the last 18 months of his life, with special recognition to his nurse Pam Braid.

Cremation was private and arranged by Conte Funeral Homes in North Andover. A celebration of George's life will be held later in the year.
