Salisbury, MA - George H. Houghton, 76, died on Thanksgiving Day surrounded by his wife of 51 years, Ann-Marie (Lisien) Houghton and his three children.
Born in Newburyport on October 22, 1943, he was the son of the late George C. "Bunny" and Esther J. (Jaques) Houghton. He was a graduate of Newburyport High School and Salem State College. George was a lifelong public servant. He worked for the Department of Environmental Management Bureau of Forest Fire Control for 36 years, retiring as a District Fire Warden. He also served as a Firefighter/EMT with Salisbury Fire Department for 27 years. George devoted himself to his family and his work. He exemplified humility, integrity, and decency.

George was deeply spiritual. In 1976, he became an Associate of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. This lifelong commitment sustained him and gave his life meaning and purpose. The Sisters joined his family in celebrating his 50th wedding anniversary last year.

George loved nature. After retiring, he delighted in packing a lunch and spending hours at the Reservation. He especially loved watching the waves crash over the jetties. He and his wife also enjoyed spending weekends in their camper in Freedom, N.H. Favorite pastimes included sitting by a campfire, exploring the area, and simply appreciating the majestic scenery.

In addition to his beloved wife, he leaves behind three children, George, Maria, and Daniel; a sister, Barbara Lucy; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Dear Ann Marie and family,
Please know of my deepest sympathy on the death of George. I will always remember him for calming ways and his gentle smile and family values. He was a wonderful man with a deep faith shared with so many through his public service and love of Gods creation in nature.
Please know of my thoughts and prayer at this difficult time. Being a family of faith you know that George is enjoying the gift of peace that we cannot begin to comprehend. He is now with our God. May he Rest In Peace.
