Gene A. Cammett Obituary

Formerly of Newburyport - Gene A. Cammett, 76, of North Attleboro, formerly of Newburyport MA and Medina OH, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2022, at HopeHealth Hulitar Hospice Center in Providence, RI after a courageous battle with Cancer. His daughters were by his side.

He was born in Amesbury on July 11, 1945, the son of the late Arthur Leslie of Amesbury and Ruth W. (Morrill) Cammett Jr of South Hampton.

His early life was spent in Amesbury, MA. He graduated from Brunswick High School in Brunswick, ME in 1963 after his family moved. He attended Bryant Stratton College in Boston and graduated in 1966 with a degree in Business.

Gene held many different positions at different companies throughout his career. He was a national sales and marketing manager for the first part of his career until he retired in 1988. The second part of his career he worked in funeral services including for H.L. Farmer and Sons Funeral Homes. When asked why he chose to change gears like that, he would say it gave him comfort to know he was helping others in their most difficult of times.

Gene loved the City of Newburyport. He cherished being active in the Lions Club and Knights of Columbus. Serving as the president of both. He also served as a past chairman of Yankee Homecoming. He was the original "planner" and "starter" of the Newburyport High School All Night Graduation party in 1989 - a tradition that continues to this day. Gene received numerous awards and recognitions for his volunteerism over the 20 years he lived in Newburyport. He helped and organized too many clubs, events and activities to list and give full credit to but he loved being a part of every single one.

Gene loved to travel. He explored many parts of the world for both business and pleasure. He was proud to say he saw all 50 states and many different countries. He was an avid skier and was always the first to jump in any pool and swim his laps.

Gene and Joanne left Newburyport and lived in Ohio for nearly 20 years, returning to Massachusetts five years ago to be near family, friends and his favorite city. Nothing gave him more joy than being with and supporting his grandchildren in all their activities. He could always be found cheering on his grandson's sports teams, attending their various events and karate belt tests. He loved his adventures with them more than anything and cherished being their Papa. Over the last year they were able to cross off many bucket list items together.

Gene is survived by his wife of 52 years, Joanne Rose (Maria) Cammett, his two daughters Leslee J. Murphy and her husband, Michael of North Attleboro and Tarah M. Cammett and her husband Ron Boisvert of Newburyport. He was the Papa of Connor Murphy, Brendan Murphy, and Soraya Boisvert.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his visitation on Sunday, Jan. 23 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Home, 106 Summer St., Haverhill. Face coverings are recommended. Due to the pandemic, there will be a private celebration of life held at the convenience of the family. There is also a swinging bench in Gene's honor near the Harbor Master's office on the Newburyport Boardwalk where all are welcome to visit and take a moment to remember him.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Gene's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association. A foundation dear to his heart since his wife Joanne's diagnosis.
