Groveland - Groveland - Gary Lynn Hochstetler died peacefully at home on September 6, 2024. He was 76. Gary was born on December 17, 1947, to Harold and Lydia (Hershberger) Hochstetler in Fargo, North Dakota. The family moved several times in Gary's childhood, and he spent most of his youth in Nampa, Idaho, where he graduated from Nampa Christian School in 1966. He went on to study at Hesston College and Northeastern University, where he earned a degree in Respiratory Therapy in 1974. He became a registered respiratory therapist later that year. Later in his career, Gary moved into healthcare marketing and management, managing sales for several national manufacturers of durable medical equipment. He enjoyed the scientific challenges of respiratory science, along with the social and psychological elements of sales and marketing.
In 1968 Gary moved to Boston, where he met his lifelong partner and wife, Judith (Clark) Hochstetler. Together the two raised two children. Gary was a great fan of Boston sports, particularly the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox. It was an interest he deeply shared with his son, Andrew. Gary was also interested in politics, from national elections to town politics. When he was able he enjoyed attending the Groveland Town meeting. Politics was an interest he shared with his daughter, Laurie. While they did not always see eye-to-eye on policy, they both enjoyed a feisty political debate. His career involved significant travel, and Gary embraced visiting new places and experiencing new cultures. A talented artist, Gary enjoyed working with watercolor paints and created numerous striking botanical and landscape paintings. He was a consummate epicure and loved nothing more than an excellent steak and interesting wine. Gary was active in his community. During his young adulthood, he played in multiple community softball leagues. He was also a member of the Groveland Congregational Church for many years, serving in various leadership positions, including as a trustee. He will be greatly missed, particularly for his swift wit and exceptional sense of humor. Truly, Gary could find humor in any situation.
Gary is survived by his wife Judith, of Groveland, Massachusetts, daughter Laurie, of Princeton, New Jersey, and son, Andrew, of Groveland, Massachusetts. Additionally, he is survived by his siblings, Laura Heppner of Salem, Oregon, John Hochstetler (Sheila) of Salem, Oregon, and Doug (Mardi) Hochstetler, of Albany, Oregon, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Harold and Lydia, his brothers-in-law, Dennis Nissley and Mark Heppner, and nephews Robb Heppner and Adam Clark.
