Douglas F. Buchs Obituary

S. Hamilton - S. Hamilton - Douglas F. Buchs, husband of Merrily (Spence) Buchs, died July 11, 2025, at age 83 at his home in South Hamilton. The son of the late Andre and Laura (Larrivee) Buchs, he grew up and went to local schools in Darien, CT.

After attending Colgate University, he enlisted in the Air Force, where he served as a weatherman at Malmstrom AFB, Montana. After attempting to ride his horse across the country (he made it to the Mississippi River), he cowboyed in Aspen, felled timber in Wyoming, worked on the "kill floor" in a slaughterhouse in Denver, hauled freight across the US in his own tractor/trailer rig, and ran heavy equipment in Alaska. After he settled in Hamilton in 1986, he finally found his calling as a writer and was so proud when his novel, "The Mescalero Project," was published in 2005.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his son Andy Irvine (Lisa) of Fort Lauderdale, FL; his son Curtis Buchs (Shalon) of Ocala, FL; four grandsons, Ian and Isaak Irvine and Caiden and Carter Buchs; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Dr. Andre Buchs and his two sisters, Barbara Connolly and Priscilla Williams.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Immanuel Baptist Church, 45 Central Street, Ipswich, Sunday, Aug. 3rd, at 1 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Douglas's memory to St. Joseph's Indian School, 1301 N Main Street, Chamberlain, SD 57325 or Acord Food Pantry, PO Box 2203, South Hamilton, MA 01982.
