Merrimac - Merrimac - Donald Peterson, 76, passed away suddenly at home on Saturday, May 31st. Born in Amesbury on November 15, 1948, he was the beloved son of the late Eric Peterson and Blanche Picard, and devoted twin brother of the late Donna Ackroyd.

Donald is survived by his wife, Doreen; his sons, Jesse Peterson, 50, of Boston (with his partner, Jennifer Bale), and Ben Peterson, 48, of Salt Lake City, UT (with his wife, Meredith Peterson). He also leaves numerous in-laws, nephews, nieces, and his cherished grandsons, Max and Charlie Peterson, who were the absolute lights of his life.

A 1966 Amesbury High School graduate, Donald was class president and a standout in football and baseball. He bravely served in the Vietnam War (Spec 4, 3rd Battalion, 6th Artillery), earning a Bronze Star and Purple Heart on May 11, 1969. He then dedicated 30 years as a UPS package driver, respected for his tireless work ethic, dependability, and kindness.

Above all, Donald was a devoted father. He was a constant presence at his sons' baseball games, instilling in Jesse and Ben his unwavering values and love for Boston sports.

In retirement, Donald found joy in life's simple rhythms: his morning Dunkin' iced coffee with the paper, tending his lawn and garden, birdwatching, beach days, and most of all, time with his grandsons.

Donald lived a life defined by quiet strength, love, humility, and devotion. He will be missed more than words can express.

A celebration of life for friends & family will be held later this summer on Sunday, August 3rd. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Donald's honor to the National Audubon Society or MSPCA-Angell.
