Charlestown - Diane Legg of Charlestown, MA passed away peacefully on December 30th in Harrison, ME surrounded by much love and family. Known as a fierce cancer patient advocate and non-profit fundraiser for lung cancer research, Diane was a much beloved and loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, and friend. She will be greatly missed by many.

Diane Daniels was born on July 7, 1962, in Schenectady, NY to Twila and Dean Daniels. Diane graduated from Joel Barlow High School in CT in 1980. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Russell Sage College in Troy, NY in 1984. Diane spent most of her professional career with General Electric Co. She was a dynamic salesperson in the plastics industry. With GE, Diane lived in Southern California and Southern Florida, before returning to New England and living in Newton, MA. During this time, she also earned a Master of Business Administration from Northeastern University.

Diane married David Legg on April 15, 1995, at Asylum Hill Church in Hartford, CT. Thereafter, Diane and Dave lived in the North End of Boston where Diane enjoyed frequenting her favorite local Italian restaurants. Diane found Dave his dream house and barn in Amesbury where they lived for 30 years. Diane gave birth to her first son, Dean in 1996. Two years later, good fortune continued with the blessing of the arrival of another baby boy, Cole. Diane continued her successful career with GE, including being named Salesperson of the Year. Diane always wanted to have a large family. After the loss of her son baby Daniel, Diane delivered her third son, William (Will), in 2003. Diane cultivated many new friendships in the Amesbury area to add to her growing sphere of love. Diane and family enjoyed many weekends and vacations with friends and family on Long Lake in Harrison, Maine where, if Diane was not on the beach or skiing, she was in the kitchen preparing breakfast, lunch, or dinner with love for their guests.

In October 2004, at age 42, Diane was diagnosed with lung cancer and had her upper left lobe surgically removed. Despite the initial shock and the grim statistics associated with lung cancer, following adjunct chemotherapy, Diane was able to return to her energetic self as mother of three young boys. After 20 years with GE she "retired" to focus on lung cancer advocacy and fund raising. Moved by the death of her friend Sue Levinsky from lung cancer, Diane became very active with Lung Cancer Alliance and started the "Shine A Light" event to raise awareness for the underfunded disease during November, lung cancer awareness month. When stage IV lung cancer returned in 2006, Diane made it her mission to accomplish all she could in the time she had left. She ran 4 half marathons and continued to ski. Over the past 15 years, Diane became very well known among members of the Pan Mass Challenge community. She rode in 13 of the 2-day, 170-mile PMC bicycle rides and was a keynote speaker at 3 PMC events. She learned to pitch a baseball so that she could throw out the first pitch at a Red Sox game; and threw a strike! Diane's energy and enthusiasm was on full display when she played a night of the card game "45s" with friends or family. In recent years Diane also enjoyed many types of word games, crossword puzzles, video games and painting on her phone.

Diane founded the non-profit LUNGstrong.org in 2011. As the president of the board, Diane, with the support of many friends and family have raised over $7 million including $5 million as part of the Pan-Mass Challenge for Dana Farber Cancer Institute and $2 million for Mass General Brigham Cancer Center from an annual 5K Race event.

Throughout her life, she had the gift of making people feel like they were family. She was a spiritual person who was caring, humble and kind.

Diane was recently predeceased by her parents, Twila Alice (MacPhee) and (Thomas) Dean Daniels and previously by her son, Daniel Richard Legg. She leaves behind her husband David Richard Legg currently residing in Charlestown, MA and their three sons Dean Robert Legg and recent fiancé Lucy Colarusso, Cole Crissman Legg, and William Donnelly Legg. She is also survived by her brother Thomas F. Daniels and sister-in-law Lori (Schneider) Daniels of Mammoth Lakes, CA, and her nephews Leo Daniels and Forest Daniels; her sister Elizabeth (Beth) Vossler and brother-in-law Christopher M. Vossler of West Hartford, CT, and her nephew Robert Vossler and his wife Carrie Vossler (Uhlein) and nieces, Sarah Vossler and Molly Vossler; and mother-in-law, Lorraine Legg.

A memorial service for Diane Legg will be held at Central Congregational Church in Newburyport, MA at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 10, 2025 and presided by Rev. Dr. Christopher P. Ney, Pastor.
