Charles "Chip" K. Nutter, Jr. Obituary

Newburyport - Newburyport - Charles Kaulbach Nutter Jr., known to many as Chip, died peacefully at his home on September 15, 2025, a month before his 68th birthday. Chip spent an idyllic childhood in Hampton, NH playing pickup and Little League Baseball, riding his bike to North Beach, and learning how to use tools at his father Charlie's side. He graduated from Winnacunnet High School in 1975. Chip attended Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, receiving a Bachelor in Architecture degree in 1980. He began his professional life in Boston at Skidmore, Owings, & Merrill. He spent a year at Graham Gund Associates and a decade at The Stubbins Associates.

Chip and his family came to Newburyport in 1995, transitioning from large commercial architectural practices to the smaller commercial and historic renovation practice of Jonathan Woodman in Newburyport. Here, he enjoyed the rare combination of challenging professional growth and the time to take his sons to school and assist in coaching baseball, where the opening of his backpack signaled to all the players that Bazooka bubble gum was sure to follow. However, it must be noted that Chip had little patience for the consumption of any snacks other than sunflower seeds during the game. In 2010, Chip assumed ownership of Woodman Associates Architects when Jonathan decided it was time to retire. After 14 years, Chip himself decided to retire. This was a difficult decision for him, but his physical limitations impelled him.

Chip leaves behind his loving wife, Katherine Flaherty, his two sons, Charles and James Nutter, now both of Boston, and his brother Richard Nutter and his sister, Mary Ann Pottle, both of Exeter, NH. He loved good music, fixing appliances, and watching juvenile comedies. Chip will be greatly missed.

In accordance with Chip's wishes, a private memorial will be held by the family at a future date. The Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home, 193 High St., Newburyport, MA 01950 is assisting with Mr. Nutter's funeral arrangements.

In honor of Chip's family and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society at https://www.cancer.org/.
