Georgetown - Georgetown - Georgetown, MA-Barbara Rogers Morehouse, age 89, passed away on June 18, 2025, at her beloved home. Barbara has had a long and fulfilling life filled with a loving family, treasured friends, and her flowers. Barbara was born March 4, 1936 to S. Eugene and Louise (Hollenbach) Rogers. She and her older sister, Jeanne Elizabeth, grew up on a dairy farm on Wauwecus Hill in Norwich, CT. Their farm had no indoor plumbing or electricity. When she was in fourth grade, Barbara's parents bought a farm at the bottom of the hill which had both electricity and plumbing.
After Barbara graduated from Norwich Free Academy, the Rogers bought a dairy farm in Essex Center, VT. Sixteen- year-old farm hand, Bob Morehouse, received permission from his parents to accompany the Rogers to Vermont. This led to a 56-year marriage between Bob and Barb. Three children were born of this union. The couple settled in Georgetown after moving around a bit for the Army, purchasing a farm that they named after the brook that encircled the property, Wheeler Brook.
After graduating from the University of Vermont, Barb had a long career as a teacher: first in Essex Junction, VT; then Manhattan, Kansas; and finally, starting in 1965, in Georgetown, MA. In Georgetown, she worked at the Metcalf House, Central School (now the town hall), Georgetown Jr/Sr. High School, and at the old Penn Brook School. Many children enjoyed the zeal and passion that were a hallmark of Mrs. Morehouse's career. A classroom full of animals including birds, a rabbit, an iguana, a turtle, and various farm animals who visited helped develop responsibility in her students. Other activities included nature walks, maple sugaring, trips to Wheeler Brook Farm, dissecting animals, lots of stories read aloud with great expression, and pumpkin weighing and measuring. Barbara was always a champion for the misunderstood, the misbehaving, and students with learning differences. She worked hard to challenge every child she encountered.
Barb was an outstanding hostess. So many parties and dinners were shared around her table. These ranged from skating, hotdog, and cocoa parties around the pond, to neighborhood picnics complete with a frog catching and jumping contests, and a much-anticipated Christmas party where the children put on an elaborate performance complete with set and costumes. She catered two of her children's weddings with help from family and friends, even making their wedding cakes. She was never afraid to try something new, including an organ-meat supper complete with stuffed heart, kidneys, liver and tongue. The invited guests were less than enthusiastic. It's no wonder that a granddaughter and daughter became vegan.
After retirement, Barbara started a new career as owner and operator of Barb's Blossoms. She grew and sold beautiful bouquets, including her favorite sunflowers, and shared her skills with young children by offering classes.
Barb had many interests including beekeeping, bird watching, wild flower identification, and swimming. She was a member (and often president) of many clubs in town including 4-H, 2 couples' clubs, 2 garden clubs, TOPS, Red Hat Society, Kreative Krafters, Book Club, and Thursday Breakfast Club.
Barbara was a warm and caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was not afraid to advocate for her children if the need arose. She was so proud of all of her children and grandchildren and loved them unconditionally. Her love of bright, bold colors symbolized how she lived her life-she brought light and life to all who knew her.
Barbara is survived by her daughters, Ellen M. Langsner (Alex) and Gail E. Morehouse, son Robert E. Morehouse (Joanna); grandchildren Andrew (Janet) Langsner, Abi Langsner, Evan(Samantha) Morehouse, Jessica Brown (Conor), Robin Morehouse; and great-grandchildren Fiona, James, and Maya Brown, Linden Langsner-Riley, Manny and Amelia Gonzales, and Naya Langsner; as well as a loving extended family. She is predeceased by husband, Bob Morehouse; parents, Gene and Louise Rogers; and sister, Jeanne Jatkowski.
Family and friends are cordially invited to attend Barb's Funeral Service on Thursday, June 26th at 11AM in The First Congregational Church, Georgetown. Visitation will be held on Wednesday afternoon from 4 to 6pm at the Conte - Giamberardino Funeral Home, 14 Pleasant Street, Georgetown.
