Alfred "Fred" Fecteau Obituary

Newbury - The communities of Newbury and Newburyport, MA lost a stalwart member citizen whose ethos was truly larger than life.

On Sunday, January 25, 2026, Alfred E. Fecteau ("Fred," "Freddie") passed away peacefully in his sleep after a brief and intense battle with end-stage pancreatic cancer. Fred was born on July 16, 1938, in Danvers, MA, the 4th of 8 children to Ernest and Lillian Fecteau.

Fred left school after his 8th grade to learn carpentry and from there began a career as a finish carpenter that spanned 7 decades. Many homes in Massachusetts have Fred's imprint. As a contractor and craftsman, he was renowned for his attention to detail, hands-on reliability, and masterful workmanship. Add to that the day-to-day honesty he provided to his customers and trades partners alike, Fred was highly sought after. Fred was self-educated; he was an avid reader and keen observer. While Freddie was a prolific talker (he built a soapbox and kept it in his flatbed) and could spin a yarn with the best, he was an excellent listener. Holding court under the maple tree in front of the house was a favorite pastime. He somehow balanced humor with brutal honesty, affection with tough love, and the provision of valuable advice with a quiet stare. Fred's smile could light the night sky. Fred had legions of friends and allies; it would be tough to have known Fred without being favorably affected by him; and there are many contemporaries of his children who also viewed Fred as a father figure.

Fred leaves behind his devoted wife, Elizabeth ("Betty") of 61 years; they lived together in the same home for nearly their entire married life; two loving children, daughter, Kim and her husband, Jeff, son Jeffrey, 4 grandchildren ("Papa" to Brandon, Colby, Caleb, and Hannah), and siblings (Donna, Kenny, and Carol), brother-in-law Joe O'Keefe and sister-in-law, Barbara Gravelle, multiple nephews and nieces, and is pre-deceased by siblings Elaine, Sherry, Gloria, Jerry, brother-in-law Emmett, sister-in-law, Alaire, brother-in-law Donald Gravelle and sister-in-law, Carolyn O'Keefe. Fred also leaves behind present and past inhabitants of a quiet street in Newbury, MA who will raise glasses to the sky and seek clues of his essence from thunderclaps, howls, shooting stars, rustling leaves, and the whispers of wings.

Services and burial will be private. The Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home, 193 High St., Newburyport, MA 01950 is assisting Mr. Fecteau's family with his arrangements.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Fred's name may be made to ElaraCaringHospiceFoundation.org online.
