Melissa Rae (Young) Szwed, age 50, passed away suddenly at Hartford Hospital, on Sunday, January 29, 2017. Her husband, Christopher B. Szwed, was by her side. She was known to all as "Missy." Melissa was born in Orleans, Loiret, France, during her father’s Army tour of duty. After France, the family was stationed in West Berlin, Germany.
She was the only child of Dale and Margery Young of East Kingston, formerly of Amesbury, Mass. Missy was a graduate of Amesbury High School, Class of 1984. She was active in several clubs during her school years, and was a football cheerleader during her junior and senior years.
She earned a degree in Business Administration from Castleton University in Vermont.
Melissa worked as a Senior Auditor, and audit Supervisor for many large Insurance companies in New England, Virginia, Maryland, and Florida, until her career was cut short by declining health. Despite her debilitating health issues, Missy was active in online support groups for Addison’s Disease, Cushing’s Disease and Fibromyalgia. She reached out to help many around the globe who were similarly afflicted.
Melissa was an amateur photographer and specialized in pictorials of macro floral arrangements. She was a great lover of all creatures large and small, and enjoyed the company of many wonderful pets throughout her life. She and Chris rescued many furry friends and gave them forever homes.
She was predeceased by her father, Dale T. Young, who died in 2014. She was also predeceased by an uncle, R. Michael Lavoie of Newburyport; her grandparents, Dale and Olive Young of Virginia, and Marguerite (Leathers) Lavoie and Raymond G. Lavoie of Amesbury.
Missy is survived by her dear husband and best friend, Christopher B. Szwed of Hartford, Conn., and her mother, Margery R. (Lavoie) Young of East Kingston, N.H.; sister- in- law, Dorothy Starkey, and brother-in-law, Ted Szwed.
Survivors also include aunts and uncles, Anne. M Pepin of Salem, N.H., Celia V. Lavoie of San Antonio, Texas, Robert and Nancy Lavoie, William and Beth Lavoie, all of Amesbury. She also leaves many dear cousins, extended family and friends. She also leaves a special childhood friend, Jeff McCrady of Maine. Missy will be sadly missed by her two rescued dogs, Gracie and Francie.
Calling hours for Missy will be held this Saturday, Feb. 4, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the E.V. Jutras & Sons Funeral Home, 118 Friend St., Amesbury, MA, followed by a memorial reflection at 11:30 a.m. A private burial will take place in the spring.
Should friends wish to make a donation to a charity, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Melissa’s memory, to New Hampshire SPCA, P.O. Box 196, Stratham, NH 03885.
