Mary L.'s Story

Text size

Mary Louise (Dineen) Martin, wife of the late George B. Martin, passed away on Monday, December 5, 2016, at Port Rehab in Newburyport, close to the Johnson Street neighborhood she called home, until 2010 when she moved to Newhall Lane with her daughter, Maureen and her husband, Tom.
Born January 6, 1923, to John and Annie (Alexander) Dineen in Lawrence and raised in North Andover, she will be remembered as a loving mother who welcomed everyone into her home. There was always room for one more. Her chocolate chip cookies have been savored from coast to coast. While there was no secret recipe, they are difficult to duplicate. She joked that perhaps it was due to her always allowing the little ones to help and not being sure that a little drool might not have made it into the bowl. In reality, everyone knew it was just the love that went into making and sharing them.
Mary is survived by her seven children, George and Lisa of Peachtree City, Ga.; Maureen Madden and Thomas Smolski of Newburyport; J. Michael of Saco, Maine; Jack of Los Angeles, Calif.; Catherine and Joseph Spinazola of Medway; Mary and Mark Rumore of Goffstown, N.H.; and Tara and Kenneth Tripp of Amesbury. She leaves grandchildren, Theresa Martin, Michael Martin, April Martin (Jason) McElrath, Melissa Madden (Bryan) Burdick, Christine Madden, Matthew Madden, Joseph, James and Christina Spinazola, Beth Spenla, Kyra, Macy, Owen and Noel Tripp; as well as six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Patricia Moriaty Higgins of Hampton, Virginia; a brother-in-law, John Martin of Plaistow, N.H.; as well as a multitude of nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by siblings, Owen, Charles and John Dineen, Elizabeth Howard and Anne Byrne; son-in-law, Francis Madden; and grandchild, Nicole Madden.
Family and friends are invited to Mary’s memorial Mass at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 10, 2016, at Immaculate Conception Church in Newburyport. Burial will be private. The Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home, 193 High St., Newburyport, MA 01950 is assisting Mrs. Martin’s family with her funeral arrangements.
