Mary Catherine (O'Donnell) "Kay"'s Story
Mary Catherine (O’Donnell) “Kay” Shute, age 91, of Exeter, N.H., formerly of Amesbury, Mass., died Tuesday evening, December 13, 2016, at Exeter Hospital surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Beverely, Mass., to Catherine (Finnegan) O’Donnell and Bernard A. O’Donnell, she attended schools in South Deerfield, Mass., graduating from Groveland High School in 1942, where she managed the girls’ basketball team.
She worked at CBS Hytron in Newburyport in quality control, where she met her loving husband, Cliff. She also worked for the Merrimack Hat Shop in Amesbury, was a practical nurse at the Bellaire Nursing Home in Amesbury, and was a quality control manager at Star Tronics in Amesbury and then Georgetown. She retired from the Amesbury School System at the age of 65.
Family was her delight and the most important thing to her. She loved family gatherings, all the cookouts, camping trips, and a tall glass of Guinness on St. Patrick’s Day. Kay watched her children and grandchildren grow up and become loving and wonderful adults. In her later years she was delighted to watch and play with her great-grandchildren, who all called her “GG.” She was a lifelong supporter of children’s causes, especially St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
She leaves behind her sons, Dennis J. Shute of Exeter, N.H.; William F. Shute and wife, Suzanne of Amesbury and Philip A. Shute and wife, Susan of Peterborough, N.H.; her daughter, Edith C. Tirone and partner, Roger F. Stone of Amesbury; her grandchildren, Lauren M. Tirone and fiance, David Blatchford of Fremont, N.H.; Erin M. Fisher and husband, Daniel of Bedford, N.H., Kevin W. Shute and wife, Laura of Amesbury and David A. Shute of Peterborough, N.H.; her great-grandchildren, Maddison and Olivia Shute of Amesbury and Sophie and William Fisher of Bedford, N.H.; her brother, Richard F. O’Donnell and wife, Edith of Exeter, N.H.; her sister, Helen P. Kierce of Fall River, Mass.; along with many, loving nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 59 years, Clifford W. Shute; her brothers, Edward, Francis and Bernard O’Donnell; and her sister, Rita Yestramski.
Visiting hours at the Highland Chapel of Paul C. Rogers Family Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Avenue, Amesbury will be Wednesday, December 21, 2016, from 9 to 11 a.m., immediately followed by funeral services and burial in Bartlett Cemetery, Amesbury.
