Marie (Steere)'s Story
Marie (Steere) Merrow, age 96, lifelong resident of Amesbury, passed peacefully in her sleep at her home surrounded by her family. She was the devoted wife of 70 years of the late Daniel B. Merrow, Jr., who died in 2010.
The youngest of six children of the late Harry W. and Marie C. (Peterson) Steere, she was born in Amesbury on September 3, 1920, and was a graduate of Amesbury High School, Class of 1938. After high school Marie went on to get her certificate in cosmetology and worked as a hairdresser for some years.
She was the office manager for countless years in the family business that was started by her husband, Daniel, in 1939, Merrow’s Inc. of Amesbury, skillfully managing the office as well as fulfilling the role of mother for her five children, a balancing act she managed very successfully. Once her children were grown and raising their own families, Marie loved becoming a grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, enjoying every moment spent indulging them. She was also an avid gardener and would spend endless hours tending to her gardens, absorbing the beauty of it all.
She leaves behind her two sons and two daughters, Robert S. Merrow and Christopher P. Merrow and wife, Joanne, all of Amesbury; Susan Merrow of Lewiston, Maine and Julie A. Davis and husband, Ron of Orange, Conn.; nine grandchildren, Alan Page, Robert Merrow, Jr., Carrie Krupka, Scott Merrow, Syrena Merrow, Peter Merrow, Jennifer Duff, Christina Czichray and Lauren Davis; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and many generations of nieces and nephews, extended family members and dear friends. She was predeceased by her son, Daniel B. Merrow III, and her five siblings, Harry W. Steere, Carl W. Steere, Anna L. Steere, Edith S. Rice and Syrena Dievendorf.
The family would like to extend their most heartfelt “Thank You” to Christina Akuffo, who was her dedicated caregiver and became a special friend not just to Marie but to her family as well. Also a special thanks to the team from the Visiting Angels.
A memorial Service will be held at the Highland Street Chapel of Paul C. Rogers Family Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Avenue, Amesbury on Sunday, December 4, 2016, at 12 Noon. There will be no visiting hours and burial in Mount Prospect Cemetery, Amesbury will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Our Neighbor’s Table, P.O. Box 592, Amesbury, MA 01913 or to the Pettengill House, Inc., P.O. Box 5551, Salisbury, MA 01952.
