Madeleine M. (Guilmette)'s Story
Madeleine M. (Guilmette) Bunnell, age 86, lifelong Amesbury resident, passed peacefully Thursday evening, August 11, 2016, at Merrimack Valley Hospice House, surrounded by her family. She was the wife of the late Benjamin F. Bunnell.
Born in Amesbury on September 7, 1929, Madeleine was one of six children of the late Alex and Lea (Mercier) Guilmette Doherty, and the stepdaughter of Joseph Doherty. She attended Sacred Heart School, then graduated from Amesbury High School.
Widowed at an early age, Madeleine was left to raise her six children on her own. With her devout faith and sheer determination, she managed to provide for her children, giving them a loving home, and letting them know that she would always be there for them, to do whatever needed to be done. Her gift of unconditional love had no limits, and it has lasted a whole lifetime, for her own children, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and her countless nieces and nephews. In her spare time, she loved gardening and was always ready for a good card game.
Those left behind to share memories of a wonderfully remarkable woman are her children, Jeannine M. Faulkner and husband, Edwin of Saugus; David J. Bunnell of Newburyport; Paul A. Bunnell and wife, Janet of Kensington, N.H.; Julie A. Tomasz and husband, Paul of Amesbury; Neal G. Bunnell and wife, Terri of Amesbury; and Michelle M. Levesque and companion, Keith Souther of Amesbury; her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her siblings, Helen Gaudette of Lawrence, Roland J. Guilmette of Amesbury, Emile F. Guilmette of Florida, Jeanne M. Poulin and husband, Raymond of Amesbury; along with several generations of nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Aline M. Dandurant.
Visiting hours at the Highland Chapel of Paul C. Rogers Family Funeral Home will be Tuesday, August 16, from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph Church of the Holy Family Parish, 2 School Street, Amesbury, on Wednesday, August 17, at 11 a.m., followed by burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, Amesbury.
