Kathleen (Harris)'s Story
Kathleen (Harris) Poirier, age 92, passed away peacefully October 5th at Maplewood Center in Amesbury. She was born in Newburyport, December 23, 1924, the daughter of the late Roy Edward Harris of Groveton, N.H. and Hilda Emerson Oakes of New Albany, Nova Scotia.
She married Joseph “Eddie” Poirier on Oct. 9, 1949 in Ipswich; he passed away Dec. 19, 1987 in a Boston hospital. She lived on Ferry Road in Newburyport most of her life, in the house Eddie built in the 1950’s, next to the Harris home.
Kathleen graduated from Newburyport High School in 1942. She attended Burdett Business College in Lynn, and was employed for eight years as a dental assistant and secretary to John J. O’Connell, DMD. She worked at Anna Jaques Hospital for 23 years, becoming head of the EKG Department. After retirement she worked several years at JB Thomas Hospital in Peabody.
Kathleen has been a member of Newburyport Central Congregational Church since 1936, serving on many church committees including Diaconate, Trustee and Treasurer of the Women’s Club. She was also a member of the Girl Scouts of America for many years, serving in several areas including as a Brownie co-leader. She was on the Board of Directors of Wheelwright House, and a member of the Golden Age Club, Historical Society, Maudsley Associates, and Belleville Improvement Society. Her Oakes family in Nova Scotia traced back to multiple Mayflower passengers and her Harris/Bucknam family traced back to first settler of Newbury, Henry Lunt.
She was pre-deceased by her husband, and her siblings Viola Patricia (Harris) Swap Hall 1916-1998, Frank Oakes Harris 1918-1996, and Helen Louise (Harris) Taft 1914-2012 of Amesbury.
She is survived by two daughters, Cynthia Ann Poirier and husband, Roland Rhoades of Gorham Maine, and Cathy Ann Hornig and husband, Patrick of Merrimac, and granddaughters, Laura Ann Das and husband Saurov, and Amy Elizabeth Fowler, and by great-grandchildren, Alexandra Priya and Julian Swapan Das.
The family thanks the staff of Maplewood Center for their loving care.
Private burial will be beside her husband at Belleville Cemetery, Newburyport. By her request, there will be no visiting hours. Arrangements are by Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Family Funeral Home, 35 Green Street, Newburyport.
