Joseph H.'s Story
Joseph H. Brown Jr., 77, a resident of Newburyport died Wednesday February 1, 2017 at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.
He was born in Newburyport on February 22, 1939 to the late Joseph Sr. and Julia (Flanagan) Brown. He was a graduate of Newburyport High School, he then furthered his education graduating for College of Holy Cross with his Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics and Accounting. Joseph then enlisted in the United States Air Force and served our country proudly until his Honorable Discharge in 1963.
Joseph was employed as a Claims adjuster for Travelers Insurance Company briefly before his career at Northern Essex Community College where he was employed until his retirement in 1998 as the Dean of Administrative Services. During that time Joseph continued his education graduating from Suffolk University with his Master’s degree in Business Administration, as well as holding the position of Director for the Department of Natural Resources under MA. Gov. Francis W. Sargent.
Joseph was a Member and Treasurer of the Newburyport Waterfront Trust, Dean Emeritus, Administration and Finance for Northern Essex Community College, a former member and Chairperson for the Newburyport Harbor Commission and was instrumental in the development of the first Harbor Plan for the City of Newburyport, as well as the Massachusetts Board of Regents where he co-authored the proposal which provided seed funding $266,000 for the establishment of the Lawrence campus (Lawrence Education Employment Project) of Northern Essex Community College. He was also a local Baseball and Hockey Coach for many years and loved nothing more than attending his grandchildren’s sporting events. Joseph enjoyed boating, especially on Lake Winnipesaukee where his family owned their lake home. They also enjoyed Snow-birding in Englewood Florida for 17 years.
Joseph is survived by his loving wife, Cathy (Adams) Brown of Newburyport, children, Joseph H. Brown IV, of Portland, Maine, Daniel Brown and his wife, Christine of Newbury, and Julie Donlan and her husband, Jason of Newburyport, step-children, Kimberly Pierce and her husband, Jeffrey of Stratham, N.H., and Sherry Volpone of Newburyport, 14 grandchildren, Derek Lighthall, Andrew and Kellianne Volpone, Elizabeth, Harrison, and Patrick Brown, Hayley, Joshua, and Cassidy Brown, and Matthew and Kyle Donlan, two great-grandchildren, Stori Dillon and Peyton Lighthall, brother Richard Brown and his wife Cynthia of Colorado Springs, Colo., as well as many nieces and nephews. Joseph was predeceased by his former wife, Dainne (Healey) Brown.
Family and friends may call on Monday, February 6, 2017 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home, 193 High St., Newburyport, MA 01950. Parking available behind the Funeral Home. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday February 7, 2017 at Immaculate Conception Church in Newburyport. Burial will be private at a later date.
