Janet (Lee)'s Story
Janet (Lee) Gilchrist, just 25 days shy of her 90th birthday, passed peacefully at Avita at Newburyport with family by her side. She was the beloved wife of the late John S. Gilchrist, who passed in 1987.
Born in Lancaster, New Hampshire, December 4, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Edwin D. Lee and Rena E. (Berry) Sanborn and step-daughter of the late Alice (Moore) Lee.
Janet attended Malden School of Nursing and received her diploma in nursing in 1951. She worked at Malden Hospital, where she met her future husband, John S. Gilchrist. They were married on June 6, 1953, and shortly thereafter they bought a home on the river in Merrimac, where she lived for 55 years.
She was an active member of the Merrimacport United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, the West Newbury Garden Club, Merrimac Couplings, The Merriplayers, and cast member for the Merrimac Minstrel Shows.
From devoted wife to dedicated mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, her family was the most important part of her life. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who held a very special place in her heart.
She leaves behind two sons, John S. Gilchrist, Jr. and wife, Adrienne Starrs of Salem, N.H., and Jeffrey L. Gilchrist and girlfriend, Laurie Cyr of Kensington, N.H.; two daughters, Julie L. Gilchrist of Haverhill and Jane E. Sample and husband, Roy of Amesbury; ten grandchildren, Stuart Gilchrist and wife, Dayna, Leah Gilchrist, Adrienne Lemieux, Renee Lemieux, Jay Lemieux, Emily Sample, Katie Sample, Abigail Somers and husband, James, Reese Gilchrist and Guinevere Gilchrist; two great-grandchildren, Jackson and Cole Gilchrist, and one on the way; along with several nieces, nephews and extended family members. She was predeceased by two siblings, Edwin “Ted” Lee and Maxine Dobson.
Visiting hours at Paul C. Rogers Family Funeral Home, 36 West Main Street, Merrimac will be Sunday, November 20, 2016, from 1 to 4 p.m. Memorial services will be Monday, November 21, 2016, at 10 a.m. at the Pilgrim Congregational Church, 27 Church Street, Merrimac followed by burial at Locust Grove Cemetery, Merrimac. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Merrimacport United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 214, Merrimac, MA 01860 or to the American Cancer Society.
