Jane Welch's Story
Jane Welch Connor (Bartley), 86, of Kennebunk, Maine passed away peacefully Friday, December 9, 2016, at Yale New Haven Hospital. Jane was born June 4, 1930, the youngest of six children of James and Mary Bartley of Lawrence, Mass. She attended Mary Washington College in Virginia and also the University of Massachusetts and Salem State College in Massachusetts. Jane completed an undergraduate degree in Psychology and Social Work and earned her Master's Degree in Special Education. She was a pioneer in special education opening a kindergarten for intellectually disabled children in Newburyport, Mass., long before public education was available. She was passionate about helping children with special needs, spending her professional life advocating for and developing educational programs for students with disabilities.
Jane lived for many years in Newbury, Mass., married to Francis “Bud” Welch for 26 years, who predeceased her, raising their three children. She worked in the Newburyport public school system for 25 years, retiring as Director of Special Education in 1991. She returned to her home in Kennebunk, Maine where she married the late James E. Connor of Newburyport. They enjoyed 25 years of traveling abroad, skiing in Vermont, and spending lots of time with their grandchildren. Jane is survived by her daughter, Suellen Welch of Amesbury, Mass.; her daughter, Mary Jane Welch and husband, Chris Damon of Clinton, Conn; her son, Bartley Welch of West Newbury, Mass.; and her grandchildren, Erica Damon of Arkansas, Bartley Damon of Clinton, Conn., and Ashley Welch of West Newbury, Mass.; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may call on Thursday, December 15, 2016, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home, 193 High St., Newburyport, MA 01950. Parking available behind the funeral home. Jane’s Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 16, 2016, at Immaculate Conception Church, followed by burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery, both located in Newburyport.
