Jane (Richard)'s Story
Jane (Richard) Chalifour, 83, a resident of Newburyport, died peacefully on October 1, surrounded by her family. She was born in Salem, Mass., on March 6, 1933, to the late Raoul and Elsie (Sullivan) Richard. Raised and educated in Salem, Jane was a graduate of Salem High School.
Following graduation, Jane was employed by Liberty Mutual. She married Arthur Chalifour, and the couple lived in Salem and Topsfield before divorcing. Jane independently raised her five daughters in Groveland and West Newbury until she bought a home in Merrimac. She worked for many years and finished her career with J.M. Fields in Haverhill in the Loss Prevention Department.
Jane loved the ocean and drives along the coast on Sunday afternoons, all of the family dogs over the years, and dining out, especially al fresco. She was also an avid reader with a passion for politics and current events. She was very patriotic and loved her country, so on her 70th birthday her daughters took her on a trip to Washington, D.C., where she enjoyed all the monuments, especially the JFK memorial. It was a trip of a lifetime for Jane that will hold a special place in her daughters' hearts forever. Another recent highlight of her life included her 80th birthday weekend celebration with her family at the Wentworth Hotel in Newcastle, N.H.
Jane is survived by her five daughters, Leslie Ellis and her husband, Donald of North Hampton, N.H., Karen Laganelli and her husband, Frank of Holden, Doreen Chalifour of Wells, Maine, Susan Condon and her husband, Clinton of Boxford, and Tracey Chalifour of Amesbury; grandchildren, Julianne Laganelli, Ian Stair, and Hale Condon; several nieces and nephews; and Rhonda DeSisto, who was like a sixth daughter to her. She was predeceased by her siblings, Roaul Richard, Jr., Robert “Bud” Richard, and Joanne Belleau.
A celebration of Jane's life will be held for family and friends on Wednesday, October 5, 2016, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home, 193 High St., Newburyport. Parking is available behind the Funeral Home. Services and burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jane’s name to The Pettengill House in Salisbury.
