Howard Chester's Story
Howard Chester “Chet” Colcord, age 96, recently of Brentwood,, N.H., passed peacefully into the presence of the Lord on Tuesday, December 6, 2016.
Chet was born the only child to Harriet Haight Colcord and Harry Chester Colcord on May 23, 1920, in West Newbury. He attended school in West Newbury, where he lived most of his life. He was a self-taught businessman, running his own TV repair shop “Chet’s Radio & Television” out of his home. He lived in the homestead where his parents and grandparents before him had lived, and maintained that home until 2010. It was operated as a working farm by he and his parents for many years, and they were well known for the fruits and vegetables they grew.
Chet enjoyed music and was an accomplished guitarist, playing in a country group, “The Davis Family and Cousin Chet”. His love of music remained with him all his life.
He leaves behind his companion and life partner, L. Meredith Kaubler, with whom he enjoyed life. They had well over 40 years of exploring New Hampshire and Maine together. Back roads and covered bridges were a particular favorite. As an expression of their Christian faith, they purchased and distributed thousands of “Joyful News” Gospel Calendars over many years. They travelled each fall to gift these to about 20 small country churches across Maine and New Hampshire.
Chet is also survived by his step-daughter, Cynthia “Cindy” Perkins and her husband, Alan, of Kingston, N.H., and three grandsons and their families, Luke Perkins and his wife, Becca of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Ian Perkins of Portsmouth, N.H., and Benjamin Perkins and his wife, Amanda of Dover, N.H., along with four great-grandchildren, Grace, Lydia and Joshua Perkins of Port-au-Prince, and James Perkins of Dover.
He thoroughly enjoyed being “Grampie Chet”, and was a patient and happy grandfather who loved, listened and taught them much about faith and kindness. The entire family is grateful for his faith-filled example of gentleness, humility and integrity.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at 1 p.m. at Paul C. Rogers Family Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Avenue, Amesbury, followed by burial in Bridge Street Cemetery, West Newbury.
