Gloria Anne (Smith)'s Story
Gloria Anne (Smith) Flanders, age 93, passed peacefully at Merrimack Valley Health Center in Amesbury on November 6, 2016 surrounded by the family she loved so dearly.
Born in Toledo, Ohio, November 2, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Ora and Anamartha (Reid) Smith.
A lifetime resident of Amesbury, as a child she lived many years in the Mary Baker Eddy House where her parents were caretakers. She had worked in the high school cafeteria for 20 years and was a former President of the Horace Mann PTA. She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church where she taught Sunday School and belonged to the St. Anne’s Guild. She was also a member of the Amesbury Homemakers’ Club. Gloria had a passion for reading that she passed on to her children. She was an avid Red Sox fan and puzzle solver and loved watching the “Wheel” every night. The family loved her gift for storytelling, the interest she showed in all their adventures, and the joy she took in the simplest things. Later in life, she loved going to her son’s cottage in Maine and on adventure trips with her daughters. Nana was beloved by all her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Gloria was predeceased by her devoted husband of 59 years, Benjamin Flanders, Jr. who was her high school sweetheart. She is survived by her three loving children, Anne Allen and husband, Thomas of West Townsend; Benjamin Flanders III and wife, Joan of Amesbury; and Jane Flanders and husband, Jerry Alexander of Cambridge; her beloved grandchildren, Abigail, Rachael, Shelly, Jeremy, Rebecca, Emma and Karl; along with nine great-grandchildren and her cat, Jack.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the Merrimack Valley Health Center for the loving care they took of our beautiful mother.
Funeral services and burial at Mt. Prospect Cemetery, Amesbury, will be private for the family and there will be no visiting hours. To celebrate her life and love of reading, the family asks that donations in her memory be made to the Friends of the Amesbury Public Library, 149 Main Street, Amesbury, MA 01913.
