Florence (Stevens)'s Story
Florence S. Mackie, 96, of Newburyport passed away Friday evening at Merrimack Valley Hospice House in Haverhill. She was the wife of the late George A. “Bud” Mackie, who died in 1991 and whom she married in 1946 in Union, N.H.
She was born in Wakefield, N.H., June 13, 1920, daughter of the late Walter Ray and Mabel A. (Swift) Stevens of Union, N.H., and was a graduate of Rochester High School, Class of 1938.
For several years she worked as a secretary/bookkeeper for the former Rochester Observer in Rochester, N.H., and the Bailey & Belanger Knife Factory in Union, N.H. For many years she was an election worker in Newburyport. She was a member of Belleville Congregational Church before transferring to Central Congregational Church in 1964, where she was treasurer for the church and was also a member of the Golden Agers.
In her younger years she liked to go downhill skiing in New Hampshire. She loved to go dancing and was ballroom dancing well into her 80s.
A devoted and loving mother and grandmother, spending time with her children and grandchildren gave her great joy.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Karen Close and her grandson, David Close; two brothers, Walter R. Stevens of East Lebanon, Maine and Roy A. Stevens of Union, N.H.; and two sisters, Paula L. Hutchins of Lebanon, Maine and Marion R. Nason of Union, N.H.
She is survived by her two sons, Thomas S. Mackie and wife, Judith of Amesbury and Kenneth G. Mackie and wife, Susan of Newburyport; a son-in-law, Rev. Charles Close of Springfield; a brother-in-law, David P. Mackie of Newburyport; sisters-in-law, Pauline Jensen of Newburyport, Marjorie Fox of Seabrook, N.H., who recently moved to Georgia, and Barbara Stevens of Rochester, N.H.; four grandchildren, Jennifer Close-Conlon of West Springfield, Steven Close of Springfield, and Kristen and Alex Mackie of Newburyport; and four great-grandchildren, David, Xander, Aylah and Samuel Conlon.
Visiting hours at Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Family Funeral Home, 35 Green Street, Newburyport will be Wednesday, November 9, 2016, from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 10, 2016, at 11 a.m. at Central Congregational Church, 14 Titcomb Street, Newburyport, followed by burial at Belleville Cemetery, Newburyport.
