David Morris's Story
David Morris Olson passed away peacefully on Friday, December 16, 2016, in Newburyport’s Anna Jaques Hospital with family at his side.
Dave will be remembered for his sense of humor and fantastic storytelling. He loved travel, a good "cup of joe," fixing "stuff," from the motorcycle of his teenage years to the fixtures of his family’s homes, and most of all, spending time with his family.
Born on October 26, 1943, in Seattle, Washington to his parents, Elsie and Art Olson, and with older sisters, Lois and Shirley, he moved to Inglewood, California at age four. After his mother’s death his family grew to include stepmother, Florence and brother, Neal. He attended Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in the early 1960s, before being drafted into the army where he served in Germany.
Spending some leave in Spain, he met Mary, who was visiting from her home in England. After their wedding in 1968, they lived in Long Beach, Calif., for a few years before moving to the south coast of England where they raised two daughters.
In 1990, the family returned to southern California, and in 2004, Dave and Mary moved to Portland, Oregon, a city he loved for its friendly people, buzzing cafes and quirky ways, if not its gray skies. Earlier this year, they followed family to Newburyport. Here he was the adored Baba to his two granddaughters, Ellie and Felicity.
Dave will be very missed by his family. He is survived by his wife, Mary; daughters, Kirsten and Jennifer; sons-in-law, Damien and Sam; and grandchildren, Ellie and Felicity.
Friends and family are welcome to a memorial service at St. Anna’s Chapel at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Newburyport on Tuesday, December 20, 10 a.m. The Twomey, LeBlanc & Conte Funeral Home, 193 High St., Newburyport, MA 01950 is assisting Mr. Olson’s family with his funeral arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dave's name to Anna Jaques at www.ajh.org/giving-to-ajh or the American Heart Association at www.heart.org.
