Barbara A, (Pow)'s Story
Barbara A. (Pow) Chouinard, age 92, of Salisbury, passed suddenly Thursday morning, April 6, 2017, at Anna Jaques Hospital surrounded by the love of her adoring family.
Born in Newburyport on October 7, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Archie and Annie (Bragg) Pow and resided in the family home until passing. This home shared her past and her future, family members continue on living there. If only this house could speak, it will tell many stories of her ancestors and great friends who resided under same roof. The homestead meant everything to Barbara and it showed, with her well tended gardens, her colonial collections within the house, and the kitchen that was a hub of great cooking and conversation.
After graduating from Amesbury High School, she graduated from a secondary school, Salem Commercial. There she received the skills to be employed in the law firm of C. Francis Leary, a noted Newburyport attorney. Once married with children, she was employed by Roger Shaheen in his accounting office at Shaheen Fun A Rama, Salisbury Beach. When Roger downsized his entertainment park, Barbara continued on with his accounting affairs from her home.
For nearly 70 blessed years, she was married to Robert L. "Boots" Chouinard. Together, they had a swimming school program held in their back yard starting from the early 60s. Their in-ground swimming pool was the first in the area to be installed. Boots taught classes while Barbara, in her station wagon, provided the door-to-door service of picking up local children to deliver them to swim class.
After the pool closed, Barbara utilized her knowledge and love for early colonial antiques by going into business buying and selling at Collector's Eye in Stratham, New Hampshire. She continued with this business, called "Past and Presents," until 12 years ago.
Her greatest passion of all was raising her family, which she did with a devotion that set her children far beyond the needs of her own. In addition to her husband, Boots, she leaves her children, Mary Ann FitzGerald and husband, James FitzGerald, Robert F. Chouinard and companion, Nita Trupper, Dana Chouinard and wife, Darlene, Daniel Chouinard and wife, Rita; her grandchildren, Nicole Chouinard, Renee Chouinard, Devon Chouinard, Kaitlyn (Chouinard) Otting, Andrew FitzGerald, Steven Chouinard, Henry Chouinard and Andrew Chouinard; and her great-grandchildren, Kaiden, Riley, Sophie, Boston, Elsie, Corbin and Little Sawyer Mae on her way.
Along with her friends, coffee club girlfriends and extended family, she will be deeply missed. In her passing, she has been eternally reunited with her dear son, Steven and her first born grandson, James FitzGerald.
An hour of visitation will be held Friday, April 14, 2017, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Family Funeral Home, 35 Green Street, Newburyport, immediately followed by services and burial at Long Hill Cemetery, Salisbury. Donations in her memory can be made to The Pettengill House, P.O. Box 5551, Salisbury, MA 01952.
