Arthur B.'s Story
Attorney Arthur Bernard Smith, 71, died peacefully at his home surrounded by his partner and husband of 38 years, Gary W Dunn and a few close friends.
Born in Lawrence, Arthur was the 4th child of the late State Representative Lawrence P Smith Sr. and Maria Marguerita (Caffrey) Smith. Arthur grew up in Lawrence with his 14 siblings where he graduated from St. Augustine’s Grammar School as well as Central Catholic High School in 1963.
Arthur continued his education as a seminary student at Maryknoll College from 1963-1966 and completed his undergraduate degree in Political Science and Philosophy at Merrimack College in North Andover in 1968. Following Merrimack College, he attended Suffolk Law School in Boston; he completed his law degree in 1972.
After being admitted to the Massachusetts Bar Association in 1972, Arthur’s law career spanned across many areas as well as many locations. He served as the Assistant Clerk in the Lawrence District Court before becoming the Clerk Magistrate of the Newburyport Division of the District Court in Newburyport. He practiced Law in Newburyport until he relocated to Fort Lauderdale, Fla. After admittance to the Florida Bar Association in 1987, he had a private law practice in Fort Lauderdale, Florida until his retirement in 2016 when he merged his law practice with Atty. George Castrataro.
Arthur is survived by his husband, Gary W. Dunn. In addition, he is survived by his siblings, Maria M. Torrisi her husband Thomas P(d), Patrick J Smith and his wife, Joan, Barbara Casey and her husband, William, Neil and his wife, Annmarie, Richard and his wife, Maureen, Francis (godson), Paul and his wife Kathleen of Danvers, Christine Burke and her husband Tom of Keene, N.H., and Elizabeth and her wife Mary Johnson. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Linda Smith (Lawrence), his brother-in-law, Richard P. Beshara (Mary-Ellen), as well as many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by four of his siblings, Lawrence P Smith Jr (2016), James A Smith (2007), Frederick W Smith (1995) and Mary-Ellen (Smith) Beshara (2015).
At Arthur’s request, there will be no calling hours or services. Cremation services will be managed by Avatar Cremation Services.
