Ardis L. (Mapes)'s Story

Ardis (Mapes) Campbell, a retired attorney, age 82, of Newburyport died on December 25, 2016. She was born in Crofton, Nebraska on September 7, 1934, to the late Phillip and Vivian (Pierson) Mapes. She has lived in Newburyport since 1995, moving to Newburyport from San Clemente, California to be close to her daughter, son-in-law and grandson. Prior to retirement in 1995, she practiced law in her own firm, specializing in family law as a member of the California State Bar.
Since 1998 she has been active in volunteer work with the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families, focusing on the welfare of children in foster care. Also, she had been President and a member of the Board of Directors of the Newburyport Society for the Relief of Aged Women.  
In addition to her family and friends, the joys of her life included reading and traveling. Since retirement, she and her husband, Bob traveled to more than 50 countries on six continents.  
She is survived by her husband, Robert, her daughter, Allison Hanlon and son-in-law, Stephen Hanlon, all of Newburyport; her grandson, Ryan Hanlon and his companion, Stashia Taylor of Englewood, Colorado; her sister-in-law, Barbara Mapes of Sacramento, California; and nephews, Kenneth Mapes, Stephen Mapes, Dr. Randall Mapes, David Mapes and all their families. She was predeceased by her siblings, Daryl Mapes and Beverly Clark.
Family and friends are invited to her funeral service at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 30, 2016, at Hope Community Church, 11 Hale St., Newburyport, MA 01950. The Twomey, LeBlanc & Conte Funeral Home, 193 High St., Newburyport, MA 01950 is assisting Mrs. Campbell’s family with her funeral arrangements.
