William J. D.'s Story

Text size

William J.D. Balaam, 73, of Newburyport, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on May 6. Born on August 28, 1943, in Boston, he was the son of the late William J. Balaam and Edna (McWhirk) Booden.

Bill grew up and attended schools in Boston. He then went on to graduate from Massachusetts Bay Community College with an Associates in Business Administration. Bill was very proud to serve in the United State Marine Corps. Bill pursued a career in accounting, working for The Colonial Hotel in Boston. He then went on to work for Contherm in Newburyport for many years, where he worked his way to president of the company. Later in life, he opened and ran The Finest Kind restaurant on Merrimac Street in Newburyport. Bill rounded out his career in interior painting and carpentry. After retiring, he was able to focus on his favorite hobby of woodworking.

Bill enjoyed going from yard sale to yard sale looking for treasures to be refurbished. He loved to say, “One person’s trash is another person’s treasure.” Bill had a natural talent when it came to woodworking; he could make anything. Bill’s other love was reading; you would always find him with a book in hand. He passed the love of reading on to his children. You could often find Bill working in his shop or having coffee with the guys at Oldie’s.

He is survived by his children, Derek Balaam and his wife, Susan, Robert Balaam and his wife, Christie, daughter, Adria Balaam, step-daughter Amy Turchinetz; and six grandchildren, Hannah Balaam, Madelyn and Jacob Balaam, Emma and Ethan Eramo, Sarah White. He was predeceased by his brothers, Richard Duran, Jerry and James Booden and his sister, Carol Hunt.
Visiting hours will be held Thursday, May 11, 2017, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Family Funeral Home, 35 Green St., Newburyport.
