William Harry "Bill"'s Story

William Harry “Bill” Sable, age 90, longtime Amesbury resident, passed peacefully at the Merrimack Valley Hospice House in Haverhill, Wednesday, April 5, 2017. He was the beloved husband of 62 years to Helen R. (Thibault) Sable, who passed in 2009.
Born in Haverhill, April 4, 1927, son of the late Harry and Mary (Lidwin) Sable, he was educated in Haverhill schools.
Bill proudly served with the Merchant Marines during World War II. He was injured in Southampton, England and was one of a handful of survivors when his ship, the USS William Crompton was torpedoed in the North Atlantic in January, 1945.
After his military service, Bill worked at Western Electric. Later, he and his wife established the Amesbury Rest Home, then ran the Parkside Nursing Home on Sparhawk Street in Amesbury. Bill and Helen later moved to Newport, North Carolina where they fully enjoyed their life in a milder climate.

Bill is survived by two sons, Daniel Sable of Newport, N.C. and Gregory Sable and wife Terry of Kingston, N.H.; two daughters, Paula Sable of Newburyport, and Linda Sable and husband, Robert Moore of Roy, Wash.; eight grandchildren, Kristin Sable of North Port, Fla., Daniel Sable Jr. of Havelock, N.C., Jennifer Bennett of Deerfield, Matthew Rogers of Reading, Sarah Sable of Manchester, N.H., Bradford Sable of New York City, Troy Sable and William Sable, both of Kingston, N.H.; great-grandchildren, Brent Kezer, Daniel Sable III, Cameron Sable, Claire, Gage, and Madeline Bennett, Taylor and Kaitlyn Rogers, Holly Sable, Hailey and Riley Strayhorn; a great-great-grandson, Konnor Sable; a brother, Robert Sable and wife, Ann of North Andover; a sister, Helen Otis and husband Raymond of Methuen; a sister-in-law, Aurora Bonin of Litchfield, N.H.; a brother-in-law Jack Lane of Haverhill, a dear cousin, Kay Chop and husband Steve of Hanover, several generations of nieces and nephews and dear friends. He was predeceased by a sister, Pauline Lane.
The family extends its deep appreciation for the compassionate care Bill received at Haverhill Crossings, Anna Jacques Hospital, and Merrimack Valley Hospice House.
A period of visitation will be held Monday, April 10, 2017 from 3 to 3:45 p.m. at the Highland Street Chapel of Paul C. Rogers Family Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Avenue, Amesbury, followed by services at the funeral home at 4 p.m. Burial will be private for the family. Donations in his memory may be made to the Salvation Army, 40 Water Street, Newburyport, MA 01950.
