Victoria M. "Vicki" (Garfi)'s Story

Text size

Victoria M. “Vicki” (Garfi) Gibbs, 92, of Newburyport, a former longtime Newbury resident, passed away peacefully Sunday, February 12, at Beth Israel Medical Center in Boston with beloved family members at her side.
She was the loving wife of Ralph W. Gibbs, with whom she would have celebrated 46 years of marriage on March 27.
Born in Newburyport, April 27, 1924, she was one of four children of the late Frank and Sebastiana (DiSanto) Garfi, who came to this country from Sicily in 1921.
She was graduated from Newburyport High School with the Class of 1942, of which she was active in numerous activities, and was a long supporter of NHS alumni events.
Vicki was an accomplished seamstress, having been trained in the Garment District of New York City when she was just in her teens.
For more than 25 years, she was the smiling face of the Newburyport Daily News, starting in her early 20s when the office was then located on Inn Street, until her retirement as business manager in 1971. During her career, which she truly loved, she served as front desk receptionist, bookkeeper, display ad designer and representative, classified advertising manager and office manager.
She was a former member of the Newbury Garden Club and an active member of the Oldtown Country Club, where she and her husband enjoyed many years boating on the Parker River and Plum Island Sound.
Vicki led a very active life, having been an avid tennis player and a golfer in her later years, and traveled extensively throughout the world. She thoroughly enjoyed entertaining and was a most gracious hostess, never needing a special occasion to gather with friends and family.
Vicki was preceded in death by her two brothers and sister, Horace Francis Garfi of Newburyport, Rosario “Zar” Joseph Garfi of Newburyport and Carmella Sistina “Stina” Kolosey of Amesbury.
In addition to her husband, Ralph, she leaves behind her loving step-daughter, Jane Gibbs of Newburyport; and her beloved nieces and nephews, Janice Green of Amesbury, Virginia Famisan of Litchfield, N.H., Victoria Glynn of Rowley, Gary Kolosey of St. Petersburg, Fla., Eric Kolosey of Haverhill, Lisa Kolosey of Winthrop, Maine, Mary Beth Lonegan of Brewster, N.Y., Constance Cultraro of North Bethesda, Md., and their respective families. She will also be missed by her many dear friends, including Anneka Berry, who was honored to be with Vicki in her final hours. The wonderful memories they shared with Vicki are countless and unforgettable and will now become the treasures of the heart to all who were blessed with the beauty of her life.

“To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, this is the meaning of success!” -Emerson
