Thomas Martin's Story
Thomas Martin Schwartz, age 66, of Salisbury, died Sunday evening, October 15, 2017, at Anna Jacques Hospital.
He is survived by his devoted and beloved wife of 42 years, Johanna (Hatch) Schwartz.
Born in Boston on August 28, 1951, he was one of four sons of the late Herbert C. and Hilda G. (Greenberg) Schwartz. Tom was a self-made business man, who built his career from painting houses to carpentry, including many projects in downtown Newburyport. He was also a lumber salesmen and successful business development manager with the Iaccarino Mill Work Company.
A gregarious person, with a quick wit and great sense of humor, Tom made friends with everyone. He was blessed with many talents and interests among them: hiking and camping with his wife in the White Mountains, Green Mountains and Maine coastline, poetry writing, songwriting, psychic/spiritual readings and healings. Plum Island held a special place in his heart.
His life’s passions will forever remain in the hearts of those he loved so dearly, his wife, Johanna of Salisbury; his mother-in-law, Maryanna E. Hatch of Exeter, N.H.; his three brothers, Rabbi Arthur Schwartz and wife, Nancy of Huntington, N.Y., Sheldon T. Schwartz and wife, Devora of Provincetown, and Mark Schwartz and wife, Sylvia of Monson; his sister-in-law, Rebecca H. Gratwick and husband, Joel of South Portland, Maine, along with several nieces and his cousin.
A graveside services will be private. A “Celebration of Life” will be held on October 29th at 3 p.m. at Central Congregational Church, Newburyport. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to the Pettengill House food pantry or the ASPCA. Arrangements are by Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Family Funeral Home, 35 Green Street, Newburyport.
